About
Tucked away in the ancient heart of the Highlands, you’ll find Balblair distillery where we have been crafting our whisky since 1790. At Balblair, we take great pride in what we do. We want to share it with the world, not only through our malts themselves but by letting people see behind the scenes at our distillery. You can explore our buildings, meet the makers, learn how we craft our malts and enjoy a taste or two of our whiskies, from the very place it was born. We offer two levels of distillery tour, and you can book online via our website. VISITOR CENTRE OPENING HOURS APRIL - SEPTEMBER Monday - Friday: 10am - 5pm Saturday: 10am - 5pm OCTOBER - MARCH Monday - Friday: 10am - 4pm

Signature Tasting Experience - great tour
Balblair are having some energy efficiency improvements made in the still room at the moment, so that is closed to visitors. As a result they are not running their usual tours but I was able to get on the Signature Tasting Experience which takes you around all other production areas of the distillery including one of the warehouses. We started with a short video about the history of the distillery, then Angus took us round, explained the process from receiving the malted barley through to filling the barrels with new make spirit. We did also manage a glimpse of the stills as there was no work happening at the time. Then it was back to the tasting room where four drams were waiting for us. Angus talked us through them while encouraging us to form our own opinions and find our own favourites. We tasted the 12 year old, 15yo and 18yo from the Balblair core range, and also a single cask 16yo at cask strength, which was available to handfill in the shop. A bottle of that left the premises with me. Full marks to Angus and the rest of the team for being generous with their time and knowledge.

    A great whiskey tasting experience
I am a new resident to the Edderton village. I had been looking forward to the visit, which was made more possible while the distillery were undergoing new works in an effort to become more "green" in their processing. We were a party of 5 and were expecting a whiskey tasting of 4 different drams. On arrival the reception area was nicely presented with Balblair whiskeys and merchandise. We were warmly welcomed by the distillery team and along with some other visitors were led to a room with a large table surrounded by many carved oak chairs. Our host was a very pleasant and knowledgeable young Scots woman who talked fluently about the distillery and their whiskeys. We also were shown a short presentation video of the distillery its location and heritage. We also learned that the taster session would also become a tour of the distillery. The tour was very informative and there was a real atmosphere in the old buildings. Afterwards we returned to the large table and seating for the tasting. We sampled single malts comprising of a 12 year old, 15 year old, 18 year old and special single malt. All of the whiskeys had differing qualities and subtleties and not one was a disappointment. We were allowed to leave with a sample of any remaining whiskey that we could not finish. That was a real bonus to be able to take away something as a memory. I was extremely lucky to be given an extra special dram of their 25 year old single malt to try as the following day was my birthday. Absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much Balblair of Edderton for a great experience.

Booked this as a surprise for our neighbours who work all hours and don't get much time off, we all did the £10. Tasting tour, it was limited due to work being done on site however the tour was 1hr long but as there was only 4 of us the & it was quiet the tour girl was excellent and spent lots of time explaining and giving all her knowledge of the distillery so our tour ended up being was 1.5hrs This is a lovely little distillery and a original one too not commercialised like some. It is definitely worth a visit if your in the area.

Fabulous Whiskey Distillery Tour: loved it.
Loved it! Our tour was with Angus, who was superb - full of knowledge, funny and with a wonderful, soft brogue. Balblair is an amazing distillery, small enough to maintain its history and culture, but producing an impressive volume of bloody incredible whiskey. 🥃 On top of the tour which, for whiskey lovers especially, is worth the £22.50 entry fee, you get to taste (or take home if, like me and my son, one was driving and the other is underage) four drams of their superb whiskeys: on our visit this was the 12, 15 and 18 year olds, and a dram from a 2009 (I think) straight from the cask - on top of this we each got one of their glasses, which sell in the shop or £15… an absolute bargain! Thank you Angus, and all at Balblair, for a fabulous couple of hours.

    Small and friendly distillery
Checked reviews before booking a tour and we can see why this one had the best ratings. Boutique distillery, friendly and informative. Tastings of 4 different ages of whisky at the end, with a glass to keep and small bottles to use for the drivers to have later.

    Balblair the hidden gem
What a great tour, Nigel was knowledgeable and great fun. We were extremely well looked after and recommend this hidden gem. The drams were great and the hand pump (bottle your own) extremely drinkable. Thank you

    Excellent Distillery
Myself and my wife visited the Distillery without previously booking but were still able to do the tour. The tour was relaxed, with a very good guide and was very informative. This was not the first Distillery that we have visited but was definitely the best so far. The tasting at the end was also very informative and the free gift was a lovely surprise.

    Top Tour
Immy and I were the only ones on the tour and Donna did a great job for us. The tour was packed with detail and information about the special things that Balblair do to make their whisky different to everyone else. And it is - the tasting was informal and provided further insights into how to appreciate the whisky. Great tour - great distillery - probably the best in the area.

    Best people ever!
These folks could not be more kind. We had an excellent tour with lovely tastings capped off by filling and labelling our own labels. Among other things, we bought two lovely engraved tasting glasses to bring home with us to the U.S. They were my favorite keepsake we brought home from our trip. Just today I accidentally broke one of the glasses. My wife emailed to see if we could purchase and have shipped a replacement. They responded almost immediately saying not to worry about it and they would send us a new set for no charge. My wife was so surprised by this special kindness she actually teared up. Thank you Balblair! You are truly wonderful people running a great business. Hope to visit again!

Dear fellow whisky friends: You need to understand what you can get for a hefty GBP 50 per person when you buy a Balblair Essence Experience Tour.

First of all expect not to be allowed to take pictures inside anywhere, as this is said to be the company policy. The guide tried to explain that another guide lost his job for non compliance. Well, for us visitors it matters what WE can see. An out of date policy should be clearly understood before one pays such a fine charge.

On the outside the facility looks good and represents what you expect of an old, typical distillery. And the surrounding area is remote and very nice.

When we came the facility was not producing but under maintenance, with lots of noise from earthworks in addtion.

We got a three standard drams and a cask strength as compensation for the noise.

If the company policy does not change my credo is; Do not go there.

I live close to Balblair and for many years it has been my go-to distillery to take visiting friends and family to. The old stone buildings & warehouses are wonderful with beautiful surrounding countryside. Our guide on my recent visit was excellent. You got the feeling that he wasn't just parroting the same old spiel, and he added humour into his commentary.

The downside of my visit this time was that they no longer permit their paying customers to take any photos. I did ask a member of staff why, and they shrugged and said "instructions from head office."

At a time when so many people enjoy taking photos and selfies on their phones and digital cameras. It seems odd that they no longer allow their visitors that pleasure. Especially when you consider that in their email to me requesting that I write a review of my visit, they wrote:-

"at Balblair we take great pride in what we do. We want to share it with the World."

So if you want to take photos of a fine old whisky distillery. I would suggest that you consider going to Glenfarclas. They let you take photos and selfies everywhere and their whisky, if like me, you enjoy sherried malts, is to die for!

We had booked a distillery tour and tasting, and were pleasently surprised by both whisky and the staff's friendliness. The tour, it was just the two of us joining, was fun and informative. We were shown around all parts of the distillery, and learnt a lot although this was not our first distillery visit.
During the tasting we tried the core range, but also a distillery exclusive hand bottling fresh from the cask (18 year old) - rich, fruity, intense...
The on-site bistro offered excellent, freshly made food (we had the sandwich-soup combo).

I have visited many distilleries over the years, this was by far the best tour I have had.

This is not one of the large commercial distillery tours but a glimpse in to the working of a more traditional distillery.

Very friendly very knowledgeable tour conducted by Simon, always taking time to make sure every question was answered.

Totally recommend a visit even if you are a distillery veteran.

Had a fabulous tour of the Balblair distillery on our recent visit to Inverness. Our tour guide Julie made understanding the process so easy and other tour members interacted which made the visit very interesting. Would definitely recommend a visit if you are interested in seeing a distillery that has changed very little through time. The whiskey tasting at end finished a great afternoon off just nicely.

We had a great time visiting the distillery.
Nigel was extremely knowledgeable and personable. The customer service was, as always, exemplary ( live locally so have been before to buy whisky but not done the tour).
Oh, and the whisky is superb!
I shall be recommending the tour to all the guests at our holiday let.

Lovely private tour by Simon in which he took us through (almost) the entire distillery, from barley to barrels. Maaaaybe a bit on the pricey side (£20 p/p) but it was just our party, we could ask a load of questions, no rushing, et cetera and two drams per person were waiting us at the end (the driver of the party got them to go).

A first for me on a whisky distillery tour was to actively see the fermenting yeast in the huge barrels (God help them when they have to be removed for cleaning/maintenance) and get a good whiff.

We stopped in for a quick tasting as an impromptu decision while on tour. The staff member was very friendly, offering a brief overview and introduction to Balblair. We then tasted 3 of their standards and 2 single casks - one was a fill your own bottle cask which was a distillery exclusive and the other was a special bottling that had been done for a whisky festival that had been cancelled due to Covid. Our favorite was the fill your own bottle single cask. Unfortunately for us, we did not have time to drink a bottle and had already maxed out how many bottles we were shipping home. Fortunately for you, that leaves one more bottle of this fantastic whisky to be purchased!!! Cheers!!!
