Please anyone who is interested in a massage go to the beach to find them versus the spa- they are very reasonable price and high quality. My friend and I had Juanita and Carlos and went back to them a second time. I had a deep tissue massage both times and asked for medium pressure - she knew exactly what to do. If she was at my hometown I would continue to see her!

Overall I’m very happy with the RIU hotel and Matapalo beach. My only item of negative note was that the gardeners at the adjoining property ( Diamanté) started blowing off sidewalks at 5:30 or 6 am each weekday morning. It was worth it though as our view enabled us to see many howlers each day along with a multitude of other animals and birds.
My bed and pillow was hard is the other item of note. The other bed was not as hard.

The beach is beautiful and kept very clean. The vendors were very polite. Food was excellent and drinks were well made.

I will Come back someday!

I had two amazing massages from Hannia on the beach. She is professional and expert in finding the spots that need work. Both the deep tissue and relaxing massages were great and highly recommend. Look for Hannia on the beach as you exit RIU Palace and she will take you to the massage area in the quiet space further along the beach.

Our review on the Riu Palace, Guanacaste is elsewhere, but we were so amazed by this on our 3 week holiday we felt it was worth it’s own review
Many staying at the Riu hotels (Palace and Guanacaste) will know about the wonderful walk along the edge of the beach where the jungle/ woodland comes down to the beach/ sea. White faced and Howler Monkeys are commonly seen, along with turkey vultures, green parrots, iguanas, raccoons, squirrels and so many amazing and almost unique birds and animals
Our early morning walk was the highlight of our holiday, but there was a problem
This amazing area is a regular camping and picnic site for local people, especially at weekends. Rubbish is put into large bins/ receptacles, then the problem begins
Vultures, monkeys, raccoons etc go rummaging in the bins so by Monday morning the area is completely strewn with rubbish etc
Then early on Tuesday morning along come knights in shining armour, namely a veritable army of proud and enthusiastic Riu hotel staff who litter pick the whole area ,bag up all the rubbish which is then picked up by the Riu gardeners who transport it off site
By the end of their endeavours the area is spotless and litter free for us all to enjoy
This happened every week for the three weeks we were there , and those responsible and those participating need a huge shout out for their efforts
So often big companies talk the talk, but don’t necessarily actually do anything
Here in Costa Rica , Riu staff work so hard to ensure their local environment stays pristine for visitors and the local community
Well done, brilliant!!
PS. There is also a brilliant turtle rescue scheme on the beach directly in front of the hotels to rescue turtle nests in danger, hatch the eggs under controlled conditions and release the hatchlings back into the sea. I don’t know who organises and manages this scheme, but it is again absolutely brilliant!

Matapalo Beach , south of Quepos, (right off road ).. is a juxtaposition.
On the one hand the beach goes on for miles and miles.. On any given day.. it’s just you and the beach.
No lifeguards, signs warning of dangerous undertows, some Airbnb’s, several eateries.
We stayed at an Airbnb. Most homes are gated, have guard dogs or have been abandoned all together. You’ll see tourist and lots of locales.
Costa Rican law allows any citizen ,40 feet from your property or the Airbnb you’re renting to park themselves Within ear shot.
I mention this because it makes for a precarious
Scenario. NEVER EVER leave your property.. towels, shoes , etc.. you will not find them
Unless there’s a dog or a guard , you will get robbed.
That being said.. The beach is beautiful, dark volcanic sand( avoid light colored bathing suits, difficult to clean).. The weather is mostly Hot, Humid, with occasional bouts of rain( last for awhile)..
we had Monkeys ( 10 capucinos) jumping, pounding on the roof( a little scary).. don’t feed them! They are destructive.
We had several sloths( they carry ticks) never leave the trees, fun to watch them move, like a slow motion movie..
Our biggest concern were the bats . They are active in the evening , fly aggressively towards you.
While we were told not to worry( most locales tell tall tales , so do your homework..).. They do bite
They do carry rabies.. we managed them by focusing our very strong flashlights on them.
The uncertainty and crime in this tiny town
Gives you pause.. we enjoyed our days at the beach, but would not return.
If you are adventurous, you’re within a short drive from Quepos and Domincal.

Parking is very limited and there are no showers, or toilet facilities. The area for parking and walking next to beach is very rough and uneven. There are no seats, or amenities of any kind. Therefore, you need to bring beach chairs and everything with you. No lifeguard. The place was clean.

The beach was nice but was volcanic sand which is obviously looks blackish and looks less appealing to the eye.
We walked along the beach to enjoy the views and see the wildlife.
The monkeys are in the trees near the monkey bar.
Lots of Herons diving in the sea for fish.
We also were there early one evening when they released some turtles in to the sea.

This is the public beach where the 2 Riu hotels are located. It's the black volcanic grit, not white sand. Nothing to see in the water in terms of snorkeling. Only a few hawkers that aren't very pushy. The far south end past the parking lot has troops of capuchin and howler monkeys, plus a lone spider monkey who escaped from Diamante.

Scuba Caribe are based at Hotel Rui Guanacaste. Brilliant guys, especially Pye who took us out snorkelling. Easy booking system and fab boat trips to Coco and Tamarindo.

Decent beach for Costa Rica. Gusty winds occasionally create mini sand storms and the sun makes the sand incredibly hot. Chairs are plentiful and vendors are available. Monkees down by "The Monkey Bar" are cute in the morning.
