Houghton Hall was built in the 1720s for Britain's First Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. A beautiful example of Palladian architecture with interiors by William Kent. Currently, Houghton Hall is home to the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, Walpole's descendant, and his family. Situated in traditional parkland, the house is surrounded by white fallow and other exotic deer. There is an award-winning five-acre Walled Garden which includes a spectacular double-sided herbaceous border, a kitchen garden with arches and espaliers of apples and pears as well as a formal rose parterre. An impressive collection of contemporary sculptures and works by world-renowned artists such as Richard Long, Anya Gallaccio, Zhan Wang, Stephen Cox, Jeppe Hein, Rachel Whiteread and Phillip King are displayed in the grounds. There is a model soldier museum, a gift shop, a fully licensed cafe and picnic area and playground.

We went with a family of four (2 adults, 2 children) . Kids go free. The garden is superb, I could have easily spend hours walking around just there. A few of the state rooms can be visited - one displaying a royal throne. Current...More

Thank you for your review. We are glad you enjoyed visiting the Walled Garden and the House and that you found the staff to be friendly. The contemporary sculptures don't appear to be your thing, but, if they were, it would be quite easy to...More

Houghton Hall is well worth a days visit, as it is reasonably expensive it pays to give it a day. It is worth coming just for the walled garden which is just superb. There is a very nice cafe in the old stables where there...More

On holiday and visited htis beautiful home with a gorgeous walled garden. What makes this different is that the house was close for 100 years! so its interior is in unusually excellent condition. The walled garden is enthralling with a unique gas burner in water...More

Absolutely magnificent walled gardens, a must for any garden lover. There is currently an pop-up exhibition called Norfolk by Design which is well worth a visit. A lovely cafe (I would highly recommend the venison sausage rolls) and an exhibition of landscape artist Richard Long's...More

We had a really fantastic day here. As others have mentioned it is quite expensive, but in my view it's worth it. It is also an HHA property, and free to HHA members (£77 for a couple). Do take the option of a guided tour....More

We live locally and visited for the first time yesterday. The walled garden is superb, and a delight around every corner, the herbaceous borders sublime at this time of year and we both marvelled at the work required to keep the garden looking so beautiful...More

We've visited Houghton Hall and gardens before and very pleasant they are too (albeit a little expensive at £18 per adult to visit both). This time we simply wanted to visit the "norfolk by design" exhibition which we assumed (wrongly as it happens) would be...More

Thank you for your enquiry. Unfortunately dogs, with the exception of assistance dogs are not allowed in the grounds or gardens at Houghton Hall. This is to avoid unnecessary disturbance to the deer.
