If interested to in trekking and want to start to experience, Sondai fort is the best place to start. It is located in near Karjat which is around 65 KM from Mumbai. One can reach to karjat by local train , express train ,bus, and car from Mumbai. We my self and my friend Dr. Harichandan took early morning local train from dadar station to reach karjat by 7 AM morning. From east of Karjat station we took Riksha to reach near Sondai fort . Riksha charged us around 350/- INR for one way travel. Actually, it is nota fort but a high hill which was used to keep eye on enemies. We started to climb by around 8.00 AM and reached on the top of it with in forty-five minutes. We spend around 45 minutes on the top by observing beautiful landscape and greenery of the hills around it. Around 10 AM we started descending and reached its base withing 30 minutes. On the way we had Coffie and biscuits to fresh up. Many vendors are on the way to the fort who offers food , snacks, tea with moderate charging. In conclusion Sondai fort is the best place for everyone dto visit specially in August - December.

This is a nice place. The name is a misnomer, it is not a fort. They say it was used to keep a watch around. The place is around 70 kms from Mumbai by road. We visited on a Saturday and it was not crowded. It has gained popularity lately. The trek is easy, barring the two steep stretches. I suggest carrying right pair of shoes, common running shoes might be troublesome. It takes around 1 hour to climb up, you may take a water/soda/maggi break en route; there are plenty of shops. The view from the top is beautiful - all the hillocks and the lake. Basking in the cool breeze is amazing. Beware of monkeys.

Very close to Mumbai, even then completely idyllic, completely rejuvenating.
Mesmerizing views of the hills nested among thick clouds, and the pristine river below give a completely romantic setting to the scene.
Its quiet like a whisper, and the only thing we feel sometimes is the fresh oxygen entering our lungs.
Locals offer super fresh and tasty food,if we order in advance. There r a couple of instant, and great food options too.
All in all paisa vasool.

I wanted to start slow before going for long trek. So was looking for a good trek near mumbai with some climb and less altitudes.

So started searching online and found a well know trekking point near matheran. The place is known as sondai fort.

The trek is good for beginners as it take around an hour to reach to the top. It also have multiple refreshments point.

Reach to the top and witness the view of Gavari hill and the beauty of Matheran Mountain range

My Experience:

The trek was good and was helped with little rain in the start. It had 3-4 stiff climbs and some rough walk not so dangerous. As we started reaching to the top, rain started increasing and we were surrounded by the cloud. The view was so fantastic that i was not able to stop myself from taking some timelapse. At top there is no fort like structure but you will find some sitting arrangement and a sondai aai temple.

Sondai fort is just 50-60 km from Kalyan. Sondai is a situated around 9 km from Karjat in Raigad district. This is one of the super easy trekking destination for trekkers around mumbai pune karjat and raigar region. Overall time to complete the trek is also not much you can finish the trek within 3-4 hours very easily.

From the summit of the Sondai Fort, one can get a clear and beautiful view of the Morba Dam, Prabalgad , Songiri , Rajmachi and Irshal forts and the Matheran mountain range.

Overall it's an ideal one day hike in monsoon for new born trekkers and lot of photography and videography opportunities here.

Sondai is actually a watchtower so dont expect any fortification...the place is quite easily approachable from Mumbai via Panvel- Chouk/Chowk or from Karjat via Borgaon...the Base village is Sondewadi ..owing to easy accessibility and easy climb...(hardly 60 mins to the top), it is becoming quite popular among travellers...however, trekkers are not aware of the Changewadi twin waterfall that you can enjoy in monsoon..changewadi is slightly ahead of Sondewadi and can be approached by your vehicle..please type- Monsoon Picnic to Morbe Dam, Sondai fort, Changewadi Waterfall (by Madhav Upadhye) on you tube to find out how you can easily visit 3-4 nice attractions (morbe dam backwaters, Train valley view point) in this region in a one day outing ..feel free to ask for any doubts..

Sondewadi, The base village of Sondai Fort is reachable from Karjat Railway Station. It would take Approx 2 Hours 1 way to reach the pinnacle of the fort

Get beautiful views of Morbe Dam, Irshalgad and Matheran from the Top.
