Khertvisi fortress is one of the oldest fortresses in Georgia ; even Alexander The Great gets a mention. As always with these structures, it holds a strategic position, sitting on a rocky hilltop, controlling a narrow canyon and the rivers Mtkvari and Paravani.
I simply love fortresses, so absolutely adored this one. But, frankly, it is much more photogenic from the outside than in. There are especially good photos to be taken if you cross the hanging bridge to the other side of the river.

The Khertvisi fortress is said to be one of the oldest and best preserved fortress in Georgia. Built on a rocky hill it consists of a citadel and wall. The scenary setting is really outstanding. I just saw it from the outside, but it was nevertheless worth it.

We didn't climb up as our tour didn't allow enough time but it is a stunning fortress to view from below and from the road on the other side. Would think it is worth the climb up to see through it.

This is an imposing fortress.
It is easily seen from the highway but it is worth stopping to have a look.
There are great photo opportunities from the bridge across the river.

In a country full of so many fortresses, monasteries, and other assorted ruins, not all of them can rate a 5. A stop in Khertvisi is worth it to see how ancient trade routes were protected. Really cool to imagine that Alexander the Great (the Macedonian) walked this ground and perhaps fought here -- according to legend.
Highly recommend going across the river on the footbridge to take photos.

When travelling from Rabati Castle to Vardzia, this is a nice stop on the way. You can walk around the castle, but mind your step as there are no guard rails at all.

We were in the area back in September 2019 and were driving to Vardzia. The fortress is just off the junction with the main road where you turn to head to Vardzia Monastery.
We'd already visited some fortresses so decided not to stop and just took pictures as we drove past. If you're into fortresses, then this one looks great as a lot of it is still standing and they're also restoring the rest. Definitely worth a stop off if you're on the way to Vardzia and have time - it's easy to get to and also in a stunning location to take photos.

There is a steep walk up to the site from the car park.
Overall, the fortress is reasonably good condition. It is, apparently, one of the oldest fortresses in the country.
Some parts are of the original construction, with additional reconstruction work adding to the overall concept of what the fortress was like all those centuries ago.
Whilst there is not a great deal to see within the fortress, it is worth a brief visit.
The views over the valley. the town and the Mtkvari River are exceptional.
