Well worth going to the catacombs to learn some of Odessa's history, and about the anti-fascist partisans who used them as a base. You can go by mashrutka if you speak Russian or Ukrainian - its about a 30 minute drive from the bus depot by the Railway station - but you need to pre-book a guide to get in.... More

The catacombs lay outside of Odessa and is definitely a must-do when visiting Odessa. To enjoy it the best way, it is better to go there with a guide who is able to share a lot of information and history, and give a better context to many areas underground. It can get claustrophobic, and pitch dark so bring along a... More

Yuriy is an excellent guide and very well informed with lots of interesting information on Odessa both its past and present. My trip to the catacombs was great and I learned much about the use of the catacombs since their construction, I don't think you could ask for a better or genuinely more helpful guide. If you have an interest... More

Booking experience: booked the tour through Viator (who were very helpful), but the company wouldn't respond to emails or phone calls for two days. Not impressive at all, and very stressful for me. I thought I'd bought into a scam. They finally emailed me the night before telling me their phone was down (no word on why they wouldn't respond... More

If you're looking for a polished, easily-accessed, sanitized, artsy, well-documented, professionally guided experience, this is NOT for you. Don't go. But if you want an amazing, raw, memorable, unique, historical, extreme experience that you can't get anywhere else in the world, then THIS is the tour for you. I read one 1-star complaint on Trip Advisor that they didn't like... More

Visiting the catacombs was one of the highlights of visiting Odessa. It gives you a close up view of the very difficult life underground as a partisan fighting the Nazis. I highly recommend it for anyone visiting Odessa.

My family of 4 went on the catacomb tour and it was flat out awesome. You really get a sense of the magnitude of the catacombs under Odessa, and the courage and resourcefulness of those who were defending Odessa during the second world war. The museum there was small, but was nicely done and had a lot of artifacts documenting... More

Even though the flooded parts have been closed off, use a guide. Every "room" has a story - where they slept, where they made bread, where they washed clothes, the armoury, the defence positions, the communications room, the school room, the wells - which also provided a means of passing things to and from the surface. (There are wells that... More

This is an amazing place to visit. Did you know there are over 2500 kilometers of underground Catacombs under Odessa. We spent the entire day down there and being a retired military person I was awe s truck at the courage and the fortitude of those partisans who battled the Nazis in WWII. I will go back! Much more to... More

With 2500 km length they are much longer than then those in Paris and Rome. They keep many secrets and thus become a must while paying a visit to Odessa. After WWWII many of their entrances were closed/ruined and entering was officially forbidden. However, a special museum dedicated to the heroic deeds of locals during the Nazi occupation was opened... More
