Tsiranavor is one of the oldest and most honored churches of Ashtarak. It was built in the fifth century and has the shape of a bBasilica. Of course, it was finished – in particular, on the side that faces outward, away from the steep cliff to the river, was built around the perimeter of the second solid walls - and then turned into a fortress.Properly speaking, it's called the fortress – Pokaberd. Although the material used for its construction, is very similar to the tuff (black color, which is very impressive) and not suitable for such purpose. I've seen the basalt structures, but it was near or around Ushi, Dashtadem and Tegher. In general the area of Ashtarak was then seriously fortified.
A Church has no special decorative frills, it's very discreet and concise, but very impressive. The only exception is a paired window with a small separating column.
There is some special charm in this church-fortress.

Tsiranavor is an ancient church built on the edge of the Kasagh Gorge. It was a pagan temple and dates older than the adoption of Christianity in Armenia. When Christianity was adopted as the state religion, the church was converted into what we see the remains of today. It was damaged heavily in 1679 earthquake and has sat in ruins since.

I visited in June 2015 and was pleasantly surprised by the site, which had a picnic table out front, some shaded areas, an official information panel, and boasted excellent views to the gorge and river below. The church itself is in a moderately good state of preservation, but overall is in a state of ruin. Since this was originally a pagan temple, it does not have the same design or feeling of an Armenian church built in later centuries, so it is a unique visit.
