There are two ways to get to Gunung Mahawu

One follows a paved road from Tomohon via Rurukan, this one is the most popular as you can get very close to the crater on the motorcycle. For this reason, it was packed by young people. The other trail is lightly used as it follows an overgrown trail to Kakaskassen. We walked from Tomohon to Rurukasen along the rural road... More

An educational trip for my family and my parents. Beautiful scenery along the road, a clean cool December breeze was a memorable experience. The 360 degree scenery : Mounts of Lokon, Soputan, Klabat, Dua Sudara; Lake of Tondano, Manado Bay with its famous Manado Tua, Siladen and Bunaken; the City of Bitung with its harbour and Lembeh Island; part of... Visiting thus vulcano is free. However you do need your own transport as public transport does not go here. At the entrance you'll be asked a gift for maintenance purposes. The walk to the top of the vulcano is relatively easy: 10-15 minutes walking on (not too steep) chairs. The views at the top are stunning: you can see the... More

Mahawu is a volcano stratovolcano located in the east of the volcano Mount Lokon-Empung mountain in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. While in the distance looks Manado Tua Island and surrounding islands floating on the sea as a very broad Sulawesi. Mahawu has a 180 meter wide crater with a depth of 140 meters and has two pyroclastic cones on the northern... More

Being at the top of Mount Mahawu can see a broad landscape, as well as stunning natural panorama, plastered as far as the eye can see. The grandeur of Mount Lokon with Tompaluan crater, panoramic Tomohon, Manado, Lake Tondano, Bitung, Minahasa regency until Klabat Mountain in North Minahasa, clearly visible. Before entering Mahawu tourist area, we were treated to the... More

Mahawu is a mountain that has a crater in the middle . I go there with friends of the class. To be able to reach the top of Mahawu I have to climb many stairs. Although tired, but when I arrived at the peak ,my feeling was replaced with a sense of awe. The air is very cold, coupled with... More

This is a local tour destination for visitors to Manado. It's about a one hour journey from the city but is often linked to a bus tour of Lake Tondano which works out to maybe a half-day trip. The roads are OK. From a car/bus park, you walk up many concrete steps to the edge of this inactive volcano. Overall... More

No one remembers when the Volcano last erupted but it is now an attraction for tourists & locals alike! Walking shoes, camera, bottle of water, a small snack or lunch & an umbrella is a must. Be prepared to climb up at least 250-300 steps to reach the mouth of the crater. Not a very oft visited spot as there is... More

If you take the anti-clockwise path its mostly easy - sometimes the greenery encroaches and its like a jungle hack but the views are stunning - both back over Tomohon and the big smokers but of course into the cauldron. One past the half way mark the grass and bamboo obscure the view so get your shots in on the... More

I wish they had done more to make the walk up more scenic. Or perhaps we were shown the easiest (but most boring) route up - a flight of steps. We had to climb up twice. The first time, the crater was completely shrouded in fog. The second attempt, we saw it for about 10 minutes before the fog set... More
