Bukit Lawang Jungle is a family-owned, small local business in Bukit Lawang, offering ecotourism tours in the Leuser National Park area. Leuser National Park is home to some of the world's most unique wildlife wonders such as orangutans, Sumatran elephants, rhinoceros, hornbills, and many more! We offer a variety of treks, from the 3-hour Happy Trek to our most popular 2 Day Orangutan Trek, and our longer 7-day trek to Kutacane for the traveler who wants to experience more of the jungle.

Trek was easy. Mist guides great. Ours really good. I don't enjoy seeing animals fed. Met the large Sumatran male! Monkeys good too. No snakes, no birds, spiders, insects.. Which I live to photograph.. Bit I was there for the orangutans!

We did a day hike in the jungle with a guide. 20 minutes into the jungle (not even in the national park), there was a family of orangutans. I saw a child orangutan quite close and another young one in a distance. There used to be a rehabilitation centre which closed in 2015. The child orangutan was very likely born after the closure, hence wild, but since the mother was from the rehab centre, it was probably quite comfortable being near humans.
After another few hours of walking, we saw another orangutan with a baby. This mother orangutan was semi wild, being from the rehab centre.
Apparently real wild orangutans are very shy or don't like being too close to humans.
Still, it was an amazing experience to see orangutans and some other animals.
Unless you're from a hot country, expect that you feel more tired because of the heat despite the duration of the hike.

I was so looking forward to seeing orang utan in the wild but unfortunately, I was quite dissapointed by the whole experience.
There were many groups, wandering around the same area, looking for the apes-the guides shouted to each other to alert other groups where they would be, meaning that when we did come across them, there were at least 10 other groups there. Apparently this is the off season, and we were told it’s incredible busy in the high season, where there are so many people surrounding the animals, you may not be able to see them at all, if you are stuck at the back of the group.
But the main disappointment was the behaviour of other guides and visitors, who not only got much too close, they also took selfies and fed the orang utans. I must point out that our own guide did not do this and kept us a safe distance from them-safe for both them (they can catch diseases from us) and us (they are big, strong and can be grumpy!)
We did see Thomas Leaf monkeys, tong tailed and pig tailed macaques, which was brilliant. The Park need to control the guides more and take action of the break their own rules-there are signs all over Bukit Lawang staring not to feed or go close to the orang utans,

Alternative Starting Point for Gunnung Leuser trekking to avoid mass tourism feeling of Bukit Lawang

We did a 5 day Jungle Trek in Bukit Lawang. The thing about Bukit Lawang is that it is not at all about Ecotourism. It is kind of mass tourism resulting in Orang Utans not being able to life on there own and not finding sufficient nutrition on their own because a lot of guides (also guides with a certificate from the Indonesian Tourist agency) feed the Orang Utans (even with sweets and fried rice) so that the tourists can take selfies with them. This leads to Orang Utans leaving the forests in low season (when there aren't enough tourists and therefore the guides do not feed them) trying to find food at the plantations outside the jungle and getting shot by the owners or the workers of the plantations. Moreover a lot of guides do not give anything about the nature but only care about money. So when you go there DO NOT book a guide online and in advance. TALK TO PEOPLE once you arrive in Bukit Lawang and choose a guide you have a good feeling about. We did so and we got to know 2 really amazing guides: Bob and Rian. You can do the whole Orang Utan Trekking thing with them and you will have a good feeling about how they interact with nature and with the animals. But still, it is not really possible to have an adventure trip in Bukit Lawang because there is this tourist infrastructure. There are specified camps the tourist have to spend the nights in the national park and people from Bukit Lawang provide these Camps with food for the tourists. That's how it works wheather you want to go deeper in the jungle or make longer trekks you simply can't because of this infrastructure. The guides have to obey the rules of the Indonesian tourist organisation.
I wan't to make you aware of an alternative starting point for adventures in Gunnung Leuser National Park. The name of the town is Simolap and it is the hometown of Rian (our Guide). In this town there is not as much tourist infrastructure as in Bukit Lawang and if you're lucky you can probably still stay with local people and families. You can cook together, you learn about their culture and most important you can also do Jungle Trekking there. You can enjoy beautiful nature of Gunnung Leuser National Park, without the Mass tourism downsides of Bukit Lawang and you make sure that you really support ecotourism that way.

Don't book a tour with Anton! A sturdy man with tatoos on his upper arm and mostly a Rastafari cap on his head. He threatened not only us but also other tourguides physically, so that we don't book a tour with them but with him. He derived his claim on us from the fact that he first found us and advised us. He is one of the really bad ones that poison the climate in the city.

From Econo lodge we hired a guide and Park ranger to do jungle trekking at Gunung Leuser National Park. It was a a great day we saw few different monkeys, birds and other animals, the highlight was we encounter the Orang Utan and her baby. it was a wonderful experience that we never can forget. Recommended for naturallovers

A truly wonderful experience. Beautiful nature and many animals you see along the way. Orangutans, Thomas Leaf Monkeys, Macaque Monkeys, turtles ... Great guide Nurdin told us a lot and showed us a lot of interesting things in the woods. Highly recommend!!!!

We saw 9 orangutans, 3 that were mom/baby pairs. We also saw various species of monkeys, a jungle turtle and a huge lizard. It was tough to decide between going to Borneo or here for the orangutans and I'm glad I ended up going with Sumatra.

This jungle is truly amazing, and the orangutans are the prime drawcard. They can be seen quite easily within a few hours. Guides are required, and needed, to advise and protect you from the orangutans. You can get remarkably close.
Other animals are birds were the Thomas Leaf monkeys and the long tailed macaques, who were drawn to the overnight camping area.
We saw and heard the amazing rhinoceros hornbills from a distance, and a stunning green whip snake.
It was the rainy season, so the walk was strenuous, steep at times, muddy and wet, but worth any aching muscles!

The jungle was incredible, hot ,humid and wild. Being able to see orang-utans so close and see them in the wild is the best experience ever. We had a curious small orang-utan who came down to see our group and stared at us for few minutes and then came back to her mum. It was soooo cute and amazing! The hike is quite tough so for people with any injuries or not a good fitness level I would recommend a half day trek! If you use good guides you will see orang-utans anyway.

I used Trekking Orangutan Sumatra, TOS. Bendy who runs it is excellent and you can join the organised treks or arrange your own. I've done reviews for him and bukit lawang

HELLO! We will arrive in Medan on June 26 at 9 in the morning and fly back on June 27 at 1:00 PM, do you think it is possible to do some trekking in this period of time? We would love to see orangutans and sleep in the jungle.

Travelling from Medan to Bukit Lawang takes about 2 hours at the least. Trekking starts in the morning, so on your arrival day, you would not be able to do it and you depart at 1pm, so again you would not be in time to catch your flight. Suggest you just stay in Medan or change your flight out to 28th.
