pāṭala devī mandira, Shail Village, Almora. Not to be confused with Patal Bhuvaneshwar underground cave temple (this is not it). A beautiful old mandira, at least 200 years old, likely much older. Still in regular use. As the name implies, the is a devī mandira, with a tiger on the gopura, yet it is nandi who oversees the mandira on the ground level.

Patal Devi Temple is one of nine temples in Almora dedicated to nine forms of Durga. The temple is situated at village Shail. It is about 200 years old and is at a very beautiful location in village Shail. There are 4 natural water sources around the temple. It's an ancient temple. The temple is a nice walk downhill from the main road and most of the times completely deserted.

It is a unique cave temple and it is UNDERGROUND! One has to go through a very difficult passage consisting of a mix of small uneven steps and small rocks on which one has to slide about 2 ft at a few places. There are two chains on the sides and one has to hold the same and go down. The chains are also wet and the devotee has to go down in a sitting posture as there is NO STANDING ROOM. At one place one has to go between two rocks; NOT recommended for old, infirm and fat persons. It is such relief to reach floor of the cave! The sights inside the cave make one forget the trouble of reaching there. The Jata of Shiv in white, hanging from the roof of the cave is absolutely breath-taking; as also the thousand feet of Airawatha elephant. As the air circulation inside is insufficient for a large number of people, at a given time, only a few persons are taken inside.
It is an incredible experience!
