The famous Temple of Chitai Almora is the Golu Devta temple, dedicated to Gollu or Goljyu Devta, an Avtar (incarnation) of Lord Shiva in the form of Gaur Bhairav. Several other temples of Golu Devta are there in Uttrakahnd, but the Chitai Golu Devta Temple is the most sacred one. Golu Devata is a deity of the Kumaoni and Garhwali community of Uttrakhand in India. It is a belief that Golu Devta fulfils wishes of devotees if asked with a clear conscience. Golu Devta is reckoned to be the God of Justice, so we saw thousands of wishes or petitions written on Stamp paper and plain papers along with small or large size bells hanged all around in the Temple. Due to this practice Chitai Temple is easily recognised. It is believed that Golu devta travels far distance on his white horse to meet the people of his kingdom to help them and he always follow the principle of Brahmacharya. There are several shops outside the temple selling Bells, other items used in Pooja, souvenirs, wooden articles, gift etc. An interesting Temple for kids also.

Golu Devata is a local deity and worshiped as God of Justice in and around Almora. Among several temples, Chitai Golu devta temple is the most celebrated temple dedicated to the deity, it is around 10 km from Almora. It is a unique temple with full of several sizes Bells and hand-written prayer letters. It is widely believed that devotees prayers are fulfilled by Golu Devata. When we visited at late afternoon in June’22, several devotees were present in the temple for darshan and puja. The ambience was serene. It was a blissful enroute visit to the temple.

I have been to this temple many times as a child during my hometown visit in my summer breaks. This temple have a different aura and infinite numbers of bells and letters gives you goosebumps to see the belief of people. The only challenge is the monkeys who are around the temple. You need to be mindful about any things in your hand.

Temple near Almora, with a different way to pray and ask for wish to devi. People write there wish on a paper and some even on a government registered note and tie somewhere in the temple. Even we got our one of the wish fulfilled. Once fulfilled you need to visit again and unlock the tie again. Nice temple to be. Thousands of bells around the temple, some even the size of an adult person.

It's a beautiful temple near Almora, much revered by the people here. Golu Devta is the god of justice. Chitai temple is dedicated to him only. People from all over the country visit this temple,The legend goes that you write a letter to the Lord, expressing your desires, and tie it here with red thread. The Lord listens and grants your wish. As a token of thanks, you return and tie a brass bell at the temple. It has thousands of bells of all sizes, tiny to huge ones weighing over a hundred kilos. There are many temples of Golu Devta- across whole Uttarakhand but this one is main.
