We were four persons all 70+ visiting Ujjain on 26-27 October 2022 for the darshan of Lord Shiva and witness the early morning Bhasmarti.
On the evening of 26th we did darshan of the jyotirling. The crowd was tremendous but it was moving. After the evening darshan we saw the new corridor which displays beautiful sculptures and panels of mythological characters and stories from the hindu epics. The work of the "shilpkars" and" murtikars" who have crafted these statues and engravings is marvellous.
We had Rs200/ tickets booked earlier so we reached the temple early morning at 3am on 27th. Big que but moving. Being senior citizens the volunteers helped but some push and thrust was required. We took position in the Nandi mandap right in front of the garbhagraha. The shringar of the lord started first with water followed by milk ghee honey etc. Then after cleaning the ling with cloth the decoration started. The two young pandits were master artists and slowly the formed a beautiful face on the ling. Then they put the jwellery and the flowers. Meanwhile several bowls of fruits, sweets etc. were put around the ling as prasad. After the decoration was over a huge sack was put on the ling covering it totally. The drums (nagadas), conches(shanks) and bells were playing. The bhasm aarti started and the main priest spread the bhasm on the sack and around. The bhasm was in a cloth ball (potli) and the whole garbha grah got covered in ash. The chanting and music was loud. It was a treat to watch. But ladies in the hall were instructed to close their eyes and not watch lord shiva being covered in bhasma. The bhasma aarti took only 45-60 seconds but the way the head priest was tossing that ball of ash all over was something unique to watch.
After the bhasma aarti the atmosphere cleared and the sack was carefully removed. The shringar was not much damaged due to carefull sliding of the sack but was still given a touchup.
The main aarti followed. The crescendo of music was slowly building up. The main priest was playing with the heavy jyoti(flame) all over giving jerks and twists. The crescendo reached peak and suddenly the lights in the gabhagraha were put off. My God. The audience (about 8000 devotees) went numb and thoughtless. It was a unique experience. Within few seconds the lights were put on and the aarti soon concluded.
After some time the paid devotees like us were made to que to enter the garbhagraha and do jalabhishek. For entry into garbha graha males should wear non stitched dhoti and vest and females should wear saree. We were very lucky to have eyefull of darshan of the lord and did jalabhishek too.
Later we met the head priest who did this complete ceremony and took his blessings.
Though the time (very early morning) and crowd is a big deterrent still the bhasm aarti is something unique and must watch.
The civil administration has yet to construct proper traffic plans and devotee movement etc. The new corridor is attracting much more crowd and the existing structure is not prepared to cope. Hope they will resolve this soon.

One of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India, the lingam at the Mahakala is believed to be swayambhu (born of itself) deriving currents of power shakti) from within itself as against the other images and lingams which are ritually established and invested with mantra-shakti.

To Do - Take a ticket of Rs 750 per head for the fast line and Jal Abhishek and darshan. You need to go in the morning 0700 hrs to get a ticket or you will be line for a long. Do visit the temple in the night. New Corridor has been inaugurated by PM.

Do take a days tour to room around nearby temples.

Most important - Omkareshwar Jyotirling is nearby around 150 KMs. Best is to take cab or AC bus from Mahakal itself and go to Omkareshwar and get dropped in Indore on way back (it is cheap and most convenient, especially with elders and children).

Transportation - In Ujjain Good, however in omkareshwar you will get stuck as bus services are mostly private

Divinity all around but temple management could have managed the overall queue much better.

We opened for VIP darshan - paid ₹1500 per couple and ₹750 for single and went for jalabhishek straight from gate number 4 - lungi and saree is compulsory for males and females respectively. It’s free of charge and provided by temple management only. Don’t fall into trap of some pandas suggesting you to buy them from outside shops.

We could do darshan and jalabhishek only for few seconds as queue was long for VIP darshan too.

Overall experience was better because of VIP ticket else would have been a difficult one as general queue management is very bad.

Did a short run with family to the two Jyotirlinga immediately after Holi. It has been my experience that the days preceding and immediately after festivals are devoid of crowds and traffic. Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is an hour's drive from the Indore airport and is easy to cover on the same day if one takes a morning flight to Indore. One cover several other temples as well. It is necessary to book online for Bhasmarti well in advance, maybe even a month. People start queuing up from 1AM and the Bhasmarti starts around 3:30 AM. Stayed at MPTDC Avantika which was in the middle of a failed private-public partnership. Hence, was poorly maintained and short of staff. The remaining staff however, went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. Food was simple and decent. The property is huge and has potential. MPTDC should stop bookings for this property until issues are resolved.

Shifted to Indore for the onward journey to Omkareshwar. Stayed at OYO Townhouse Comfort Meadows. It located right off the AB Road. Meals were excluded. Room was large and comfortable. TV was not working. Fare was very cheap at 950/- per head approx for a night. After checking in left immediately for Omkareshwar which was about 90kms away. The temple was not crowded. The location is amazing and the place would be even more beautiful during monsoons. The drive is equally good as there are ghat sections.

Back in Indore, explored the sarafa bazaar street food scene. This starts after 8pm. If one can overcome the hygiene issue associated with street food , this place has cheap gastronomical delights. It's an entire lane nearly a kilometre long.

The following day checked out the Lal Bagh Palace which is being renovated. It's a sprawling property with fascinating architecture and history. Most of it though is shut off to visitors.

The evening was spent at 56 Dukaan for some more street food. In terms of hygiene, it's better than sarafa. Johny's has good mutton hot dog, which is actually a mutton patty in a bun. Very reasonable prices.

Indore itself is a very easy going city and people appeared to be generally soft spoken and mild mannered and friendly. The cleanliness all around is exceptional. There are many historical monuments for the afficionado and food is cheap overall.
