About
A MYSTERIOUS military island with secret bunkers and tunnels designed to withstand nuclear attack could be the next European summer vacation hotspot.Sazan Island, located off the coast of Albania, has a pristine coastline, but it is still shrouded in mystery, even to most Albanians. That’s because the island was once a fortified, isolated military base and has never had any civilian population.

Fantastic tour of Sazan Island! There are 3,600 bunkers on Sazan Island and if you look closely from the boat, you can spot them blending in with the rocks. You are able to take a small hike to the abandoned city of Sazan where you can see the school, cinema, apartment buildings and more. You'll visit beaches, be able to snorkel, pass South and Northern Cape, see Karaburun-Sazan National Marine Park, Devil's Bay and much more. Great tour viewing rock formations, caves, abandoned city, etc.

This island was first Italian naval base from 1914 until 1947, then Soviet-Albanian and then purely Albanian naval base until it was open to the public in 2015. There is still small naval base in the island port, but other buildings inland are in ruins. There is a nice pebble beach just next to the port. The island has 5 abandoned coastal defense batteries, lots of bunkers, tunnels and an abandoned military town.

The definition of a tourist trap. Boring, no attractions and a very average beach. If your karaburun peninsula tour is going there, you're on the wrong tour

We spent around 2 hours on the island. We had a hiking trip in the hill where we visited the fortifications, the residences, the school, the kitchen, and other buildings belonging to the Italian garrison during the fascist era. Quite interesting place, you should visit if you spend some time in Vlore

I came here on a military exercise and would definitely not describe this as a point of interest from a tourism point of view.

The only people to live on the island are Albanian Navy personnel who live in a few of the buildings down by the harbour. It can only be accessed by small boats and RIBs.

All of the buildings past the harbour are destroyed, leaving only a concrete skeleton of each building standing. There’s pillboxes dotted all around the roads and island, even some anti tank mines (obviously not live) if you look carefully. Old military vehicles that have burned and rusted in time.

There’s secret tunnels in the island that can be accessed by boat and in land but the average tourist doesn’t carry a torch/head torch or comes dressed appropriately.

Whilst it might be of some interest to military historians it isn’t a tourist POI and you’ll get no more information than what you’ll find on the internet. I’d argue it’s quite dangerous for people to visit and mooch around as there’s plants that can blister the skin in touch, there’s reptiles, you’ll get eaten by mosquitoes and there’s a good chance you’ll twist an ankle or hurt yourself.

This is a unique place, a former 'military island', which was closed for decades for the public. This is an exciting mixture of the untouched nature and the rusty relics of the military past!

Sazan island was a part of my boat trip. No people, just some historical military buildings but very pleasant for a walk and there is a beautiful beach there to take a quick swim. If a part of your tour then it is recommendation, but just for that island is not worth, there are much more beautiful places to visit.
