- V. Sitaram2 contributionsPleasant Nature Walk!More of a nature walk rather than a bird-watching trail. In the breeding season, one can see nests and breeding birds from the watchtowers. One can also get to see waterbirds form the place where the trail meets the Vembanad Kayal (Lake).Visited December 2022Written 9 January 2023
- Likes to travelUnited States972 contributionsNice walk but few birdsHad a nice hike but did not see many birds but we did hear some beyond our sight. Went Early in the morning to beat the heat and when it was supposed to be more likely to see birds. We were there in mid January which I guess is not a breeding month.Visited January 2023Written 30 January 2023
- shoelady2015World62 contributionsNo visible birdsTrail goes out and back, not circular. It is interesting to walk through a jungle and peak through to see the river, houseboats, homes, etc. Unfortunately the staff does not clean up after people who've left their soda bottles, candy wraps, etc. on the ground. It is a nice walk otherwise. It is about 45 minutes. Walk to end of trail then walk back on same trail.Visited February 2023Written 18 February 2023

Roughly it is 2 km one way walk. In fact one day earlier, during the boat ride through the canal, we could spot many birds (about 10 different species)Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 February 2023
- UKSimon66Harrow, United Kingdom61 contributionsIf you want to see birds check the seasons and don't visit if you don't appreciate lizards!Visited in November 2023. This isn't a great time to see birds, better in spring around March. But it's a pleasant walk for about 2km. Lovely forest area. If you aren't a fan of reptiles, you might want to take this into account. You will encounter plenty of monitor lizards of all sizes! They are safe! But they do enjoy sunbathing along the paths!! Lots of snakes too, although these stay clear of people. The route leads to a dead end and then you have to return the same way, which was a bit of a surprise. A great short trip if you are staying locally. But the entrance isnt easy to find unless you know what to look for.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 November 2023
- Fernanda DAlcobendas, Spain23 contributionsGive it a missGreat walk and lovely foliage but ….. what a disappointment! No birds to see! During my two hour walk through the Sanctuary, I saw at least twelve courting couples enjoying the walk! Maybe it is time to rename the Bird Sanctuary to “courting Couples Sanctuary “. Not many birds in September. I recommend going only when birds are here. Otherwise not much to see. Please don’t litter. It ruins the experience of others.

The best time to visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is during the migratory season, which usually starts from November and lasts until March. The most famous visitor to the sanctuary is the Siberian Crane and commonly spotted birds are herons, egrets, waterfowls, cuckoos, owls, teal, and flycatchers. They offer boat rides and walking trails, if you love to walk it will be the best as it feels like you are walking through the middle of the forest. There are lots of turtle and fish varieties, small water sources and a variety of mangroves inside the sanctuary. You can hear birds chirping continuously from a distance itself.
Kumarakom is famous for its houseboat cruises, and some of these houseboats take tourists on bird-watching tours.
Things to do and places to visit in Kumarakom are:

Nice paved path. Heard lots of birds - didn't see much but it was a lovely morning walk. Take mosquito repellent with you because of all the standing water.

Any time Alleppy is the best option for house boat ride..here the ride is through small canals with nice scenic beauty.. kumarakom trip is more in the open water..enjoy the ride..you should ask the driver to stop n between to take a walk and explore the areas..

Hi Julia, can you easily find a guide at the entrance or is this something that needs to be pre-organized ? Thank you

To my knowledge there are no guides here, it's just that you need to get the entrance ticket and then you are all on your own to explore...
How is it in the month of september
