It is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna and is noted for many species of migratory birds. Even though birds were not our interest, we really enjoyed the 4km walk (2km each way). We started our walk at 10am and we could not observe any birds, but we could hear their chirping and singing throughout the way.
The walk was very pleasant because despite the sunny condition outside, the foliage provided a cool canopy over the entire stretch of the path. The root system was also very interesting to see as they had snaked themselves across the path in many places.
At the end of the 2km walk in, we stopped by the banks of beautiful Vembanad Lake for a breather, before continuing another 300m to the observatory tower (which was locked). The 50-step stairs were badly eroded by rust and I hope they are replaced soon so that this tower can be preserved for visitors. Also, the authorities should put up a sign to inform visitors that the watch tower is locked and to warn us that the stairs were rickety and dangerous, rather than have us climb all the way up and find out that it was not worth anything.
We finished the 4km leisurely walk in just under 2 hours. The park is very clean and the path clearly marked. There were also a number of security personnel around to ensure our safety.

It's very poorly maintained and the bird towers are closed permanently. You will see more birds outside the sanctuary than in. No views to speak of and lots of rubbish even though they charge INR10 deposit for taking a water bottle in. The cost to get into this place is INR150 for forgeiners although website states INR100. Just don't waste your time

It is the only attraction in the small village of kumarakom, so we decided to go from our hotel with a Tuc tuc. The ride was pleasant and it lasted 10 mins. It also came back to pick us up at the end of the visit for only 200 rupees.
If you go early in the morning they say you can see the birds, we went at 11, so we did not see any. Be prepared to walk for 2 km in the forest. The walk is comfortable apart for the heat...
It is worth going anyway

If u r bird lover then only visit this place. For amateurs like us except for occasional love birds we didn't see any 🐦. Good place for jungle trekking as the place to watch birds is almost 2 kms walk inside

More of a nature walk rather than a bird-watching trail. In the breeding season, one can see nests and breeding birds from the watchtowers. One can also get to see waterbirds form the place where the trail meets the Vembanad Kayal (Lake).

A Beautiful walk through a wooded trail. However November is not the right season because the number of birds are less and they are probably up in the trees so you can hear them but not see them. The guards informed us before entering so that we didn't need to waste our time or money if we didn't want to. There are uneven tiles so you have to look down and walk.

We didn't leave ourselves enough time to make our way round the whole sanctuary, but the short walk we did manage was lovely. We hired a guide, Mohan, who was very informative and clearly passionate about the birds of India. I know literally nothing about birds, so it was really helpful to have someone pointing them out and telling me what I was looking at.

We went there on 16th February 2023 in the morning by 7 am. It is a good nature trail but could not spot any birds. Roughly it is 2 km one way walk. In fact one day earlier, during the boat ride through the canal, we could spot many birds (about 10 different species)

Had a nice hike but did not see many birds but we did hear some beyond our sight. Went Early in the morning to beat the heat and when it was supposed to be more likely to see birds. We were there in mid January which I guess is not a breeding month.

i am going to spend one day doing back water boat ride. pl. suggest me is allepey is a good option or kumarakom ?. i would prefer getting a individual small boat of 4 adult capacity and would like to explore internal areas.
i have 4-6 hours before i head to cochin airport.
please advise.

Any time Alleppy is the best option for house boat ride..here the ride is through small canals with nice scenic beauty.. kumarakom trip is more in the open water..enjoy the ride..you should ask the driver to stop n between to take a walk and explore the areas..

Hi Julia, can you easily find a guide at the entrance or is this something that needs to be pre-organized ? Thank you
Written 31 August 2017
To my knowledge there are no guides here, it's just that you need to get the entrance ticket and then you are all on your own to explore...
