I visited this beautiful birds sanctuary with my wife, who walks with a stick due to weakness in right foot. The distance from the gate till the final destination - 2nd watch tower is approx 2 Kms and one has to walk through thick forested area. However, after 500 meters, a boatman appeared near a waterway and offered us to drop us close to our destination for a small amount of Rs.300/-, to which we agreed immediately. After reaching the top area of watchtower, my wife nearly fainted due to exhaustion and I panicked. Called the boatman over phone as there was no one else in this area. Here I realised that support staff should be posted to assist tourists. The steps of this watchtower are literally falling apart.
Number of birds was huge and we enjoyed time spent over there after she recovered. A group of nearly 20-30 young boys and girls appeared near the embarkation point, which made us relax...

We didn't leave ourselves enough time to make our way round the whole sanctuary, but the short walk we did manage was lovely. We hired a guide, Mohan, who was very informative and clearly passionate about the birds of India. I know literally nothing about birds, so it was really helpful to have someone pointing them out and telling me what I was looking at.

It is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna and is noted for many species of migratory birds. Even though birds were not our interest, we really enjoyed the 4km walk (2km each way). We started our walk at 10am and we could not observe any birds, but we could hear their chirping and singing throughout the way.
The walk was very pleasant because despite the sunny condition outside, the foliage provided a cool canopy over the entire stretch of the path. The root system was also very interesting to see as they had snaked themselves across the path in many places.
At the end of the 2km walk in, we stopped by the banks of beautiful Vembanad Lake for a breather, before continuing another 300m to the observatory tower (which was locked). The 50-step stairs were badly eroded by rust and I hope they are replaced soon so that this tower can be preserved for visitors. Also, the authorities should put up a sign to inform visitors that the watch tower is locked and to warn us that the stairs were rickety and dangerous, rather than have us climb all the way up and find out that it was not worth anything.
We finished the 4km leisurely walk in just under 2 hours. The park is very clean and the path clearly marked. There were also a number of security personnel around to ensure our safety.

It's very poorly maintained and the bird towers are closed permanently. You will see more birds outside the sanctuary than in. No views to speak of and lots of rubbish even though they charge INR10 deposit for taking a water bottle in. The cost to get into this place is INR150 for forgeiners although website states INR100. Just don't waste your time

If u r bird lover then only visit this place. For amateurs like us except for occasional love birds we didn't see any 🐦. Good place for jungle trekking as the place to watch birds is almost 2 kms walk inside

Its like walking in to a forest a total of 4.5 kms of walking, there is view poin t tower , that is the whole beauty of the sanctuary, from the tower you feel like you are between the clouds of trees which are soo densed that u cant even watch the ground and u can see thousands of birds , its breathtaking. Do take a guide with you, also this place has a lot of cobras so please be careful. There is no place to sit in between just when you finish one side there are two to three benches.. rest no place to rest..
go early morning as this place is hot and humid, and do carry water there is no place to drink water in between

It was nice to walk the entire 4 kms stretch (2 kms one way) in the dense forest like atmosphere. Lot of birds can be seen if one selects early morning time for this visit. Trees are spread so much that we cannot realise the impact of bright sunshine. In brief we can define that place as oxygen factory. We could not see too many birds as we visited the place in the afternoon enroute to Lakesong Resort though we could hear multiple birds' sounds

Any time Alleppy is the best option for house boat ride..here the ride is through small canals with nice scenic beauty.. kumarakom trip is more in the open water..enjoy the ride..you should ask the driver to stop n between to take a walk and explore the areas..

To my knowledge there are no guides here, it's just that you need to get the entrance ticket and then you are all on your own to explore...
