We drove here, but most walk which would be much nicer. The church is picturesque along the fjord. There really isn't much else in Bakka, so don't come expecting to do much else.

Staying in Gudvangen, the walk to Bakka was recommended for those of us looking for a hike. We passed waterfalls, pastures, and forests and even met some ponies who were occupying the road - that's how peaceful it is! The view of Naerfjord is different than you get from the boats. We stopped to see this church, and bought ice cream from a lady who sells it from a caravan in her yard before turning around to go back.

This charming Bakka Church is located in the village of Bakka, on the shores of the sparsely populated Naeroyfjorden. While not a lot to look it is still worth a visit.

The story behind this church is quite grimm. I will not spoil it for you! The views around the area is quite breathtaking. My only negative point is the road towards the attraction. It is only one lane and it can be quite the headache if you encounter opposing traffic.

I had passed Bakka Kyrkje several times whilst cruising on Nærøy Fjord between Gudvangen and Flåm, noticing its location by the side of the fjord. On this occasion we took the opportunity of driving down from Gudvangen, through the aggregate loading depot!
Before Bakka Church was built in 1859, the people of Nærøy had to go by boat along the fjord to neighbouring Undredal Church, so it is not surprising that Bakka Church has its own landing stage at the side of the fjord. It was only in 2001 that a tunnel conected Bakka by road to the outside world.
The church is as bright inside as its white exterior, with many interesting furnishings, not the least a wood-burning stove placed centrally.
The peace of God is only disturbed by the constant stream of fjord boats in the summer. I wonder if it was like this in 1859?

On the quest of finding petrol for our rental car, we took a detour to Bakka to see this small village church, which was built in 1859 and located on the shores of Naeroysfjorden. Interior is simple and quaint. Some recent restorations brought back the original colors of the pews and frame of the altar piece. Grounds are well maintained and very picturesque with Naeroysfjorden in the back ground.
This small village church is off the beaten track and not listed in the guidebooks, but mentioned on the Naeroysfjord cruise. Worth a visit if you are in the Gudvangan area or walking the Royal Postal Route starting from Bakka. Sven Tufte can provide boat transfer to Bleiklindi from Bakka.
