About
Don’t let the name fool you: the “Carnival of Black and White” is actually full of colour. For five days at the beginning of January, the city of Pasto, Colombia is filled with revellers celebrating the diverse cultures that have existed in Pasto since the Spanish occupation. Elaborate floats, colourful dancers and tons of music fill the streets during this UNESCO recognised festival. Come prepared: part of the fun is being dusted with cornstarch (white powder) and covered with paint and/or foam, which is liberally applied to everyone involved.

What a phenomenal experience I had in the Nariño district of Colombia. Yesterday's parade of the Black and White Carnival was the culminating activity to this week celebration. Never have I experienced a district expressing so much imagination, play, friendship and the sharing the joy. I love how respect is given to to all people. I loved all the play with the foam spraying and the tagging of paint on the faces of all people. We can learn a great deal from each other and our history. Always remember and never forget the past. If you want to experience a fun carnival, visit Pasto.

Nothing can really prepare you for the Black and Whites Carnival (Carnaval de Negros y Blancos) so don't even try. You might want to wear old shoes, old pants buy a poncho and hat. Get some sunglasses or ski goggles and maybe a mask. But! Even then...
I can't even describe the madness. The fun. The culture. The music. The scope and size. A bucket list event for sure.
