Stumbled upon this amazing monument whilst exploring the area. There's a free car park opposite, or a massive parking area adjacent to it. Loads of history and background as to why its there, but you have to go to find out. Best bit of trivia...More

If you're near the Penmarch area, take some time to visit the Phare d'Eckmuhl. One of the most beautiful spiral staircases I've seen. It's a long climb to the top, but you'll get a lovely view of the seascape It's open from 10:30 to 7:00,...More

That does not seem to move at all. Not clear why and there were no explanation. We gave up after 15 mins of queue.

Driving along the coast we stopped at a beach and in the afternoon went to vist this lighthouse - the 11th (?) highest in the world. Fantastic tiling inside, glorious staicase and wood panelled room at the top, along with slightly scary (for us born...More

A long way up and probably not for you if you don't like heights. Plenty of places to stop on the way up and down and definitely worth it when you get to the top. Amazing views of the local area and out to sea....More

Having been up a few English lighthouses I found this one altogether less utilitarian with more attention paid to the aesthetic details: banister detailing mirroring the carved base outside; lamp fittings looking like something from the Paris metro; room at the top all wood panelled;...More

The Eckmuhl Lighthouse was donated to the people of Penmarch to replace the smaller one nearby in memory of the donor's father, who won his title from Napoleon Bonaparte. Lots of steps and no elevator.
