Amazing historical museum. Beautiful nature and amazing wood carving artist. Very informative about wool art great fun for kids as well.
We visited this summer with my friends and we had a great experience. Fantastic apple strudel in the restaurant with very friendly staff.
A beautiful day surrounded by beautiful hills, nature and a great cultural experience.

First of all, Vlkolinec is not a skansen. Skansen is an open air museum with a collection of historical houses brought from other parts of the country.
Vlkolinec is an original village in the heart of the mountains, which is still inhabited - though nowadays there are only 6 people who are residents, the other houses were bought as a holiday/weekend retreats.
It is a lovely little place - one small museum, which is just a show room of an original farmhouse, one surprisingly well supplied souvenir shop, one very simple restaurant with an outside seating.
The entrance is 2 euro per person and 1 euro per a car, really symbolic.
And, for your info, you can walk to Vlkolinec also quite easily, taking the yellow sign path from the bus stop Biely Potok - Kovostav, or Biely Potok - Trlenská dolina. It is about 45 min of easy walk with nice views on the way

The village is on a steep hill.
Hard to drive about 3miles.
Then you must almost climb in.
The place is great , you become a captive audience,so the locals try to get paid for almost every place that you walk in. Museum ,is far from being a museum, a gallery -is not a gallery.
But the view , the air , the running water creak down hill are fantastic.
Visit recommended!

To the authorities I say : make a normal road , so the busses can climb in, invest in few small businesses (maybe a fruit market , maybe some attractions for the kids ) and you will transfer this gem of the nature and of your history into a real money maker!

Tucked away on a mountainside, this sleepy little town has many of it's original wood (log)buildings dating back to the 18th century. Vlkolínec has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, and is one of ten Slovak villages that have been given the status of a folk architecture reservations. This place is a photographer's paradise. It's an easy walk around the village after parking. There was a small pottery stand and a one little place selling home made honey, cheese, etc. near the parking area. Chains are required to get here in the winter. Be sure to visit the picturesque church. I'll let my photos do the rest of the talking.

Crooks at every corner. You first pay for a hazardous parking, but unclear why since it is a public ground. You pay entrance, but then at every house there is a crook telling you that you need to pay more to see the miserable junk they accumulated in their house. The whole place is actually a very small village with a single miserable uphill street of 100m with nothing to see ( “private” houses or stands with crooks trying to take more of your money), and more cars than in a big city. Avoid!

It is a cute village, but like many more we drove through during our trip. Nice to walk around, seeing a woman washing here laundry in a small stream. The is a coffee shop with good potato pancakes. Nice place to spend an hour on route.

we got there in a light rain. There was not much to do. nice to see the houses and how they used to live but we have seen nicer villages in other part of Europe. I guess the rain had an impact but I Wouldn't go there specially, unless on my way.

Saw this place in transit during a Slovakian heritage tour. It is small and quaint...something to consider if it is on the way between your travel destinations, but not necessarily worth a special trip.

Watch out for traffic along the highways! We needed to get to Vienna from here later that day for a planned evening event, and there was crippling highway gridlock. And there was no accident! Just a lot of cars on a highway with not enough lanes. This was on a Sunday afternoon. Hopefully the tunnel they are building through the mountain will resolve this once completed.

Maybe it is a bit too colorfully painted, as if it were festive. Usually, the entire village was not painted in one time ;-) There are several houses in the entire village that are still normally inhabited. It's worth to see and take some photos. It is a very picturesque and photogenic place. By the way, you can wander around the hills, as we did.
