Kirinda Buddhist Temple is a quiet and serene temple located on the south coast. According to folklore, this temple was built by King Kavantissa. This is a place with a variety of experiences to visit and have fun and the temple has a lot of history to tell. The temple and its surroundings feel very peaceful. The view from the top of the temple was amazing. !!! But, the beach is a very unsafe place to swim and bathe. However, it is a beautiful place and I love it a lot. ❤️😇

This is an ancient temple Sri Lanka which has a lot of stories behind. You can visit the kirinda beach also which close by. Nice beautiful beach to visit in an evening. Sea gets aggressive most of the time so be extra cautious before having a bath.

This is a very old beautiful Buddhist temple here on the rock. A popular Buddhist temple around here. The beach front has lots of small cheap eating places.

Kirinda Buddhist temple is one of the very ancient temples situated Kirinda in Sri Lanka. you have to climb up to reach this beautiful but historical temple. When you reach near to the temple, firstly you can see a Large Buddha statue in front of the temple. you will feel the peacefulness as soon as you see this Buddha statue. Inside the temple, you can see some statues of the great Kings of Ancient Sri Lanka. A very peaceful place to visit.

The temple close to Tissamaharama and could be reached by traversing 7 km along the Tissamaharama – Kirinda road.

It was as built by King Kawanthissa, the husband of Queen Viharamahadevi.

According to the historical records and stories, some believe that Kirinda is the place where prince Viharamahadevi drifted ashore. King Kalanithissa, who rules Kalaniya was the father of prince Viharamahadevi.

In second century BC, there was rising sea water level situation ( this may be the first Tsunami Situation recorded in Sri Lanka) occurred in Kalaniya. People thought that it’s due to the sin committed by the king Kalanithissa, by ordering to kill a monk. So to amend that sin, he was asked to sacrifice his daughter , princes Viharamahadevi by setting her ashore.

After her landing to the Kirinda area, king kawanthissa, who ruled Ruhunu kingdom, welcomed her and later married her. They got two sons, prince Dutugamnu and prince Thissa.

The temple sits on top of the rock with magnificent scenic views of Kirinda town, and as its back drop, vistas of beaches, sand dunes and the Indian Ocean. To reach its summit there are steps cut into rock and a recent addition of paved stairs.

At its summit there are statues of Lord Buddha, Queen Viharamahadevi, a Stupa, the Devalaya, a Bo tree and its temple. Kirinda Rajamaha Viharaya is a place well worth visiting, an early morning or late evening visit would be comfortable to avoid the heat.

If you are down in Yala make time to see this beautiful temple on top of a rock. The views out to sea & inland are stunning. It is one of the very old temples with lovely wall & ceiling paintings inside. Also a huge painted standing Buddha nearby.

In the summer of 2018 we (Dutch familie of 4, kids 13 and 18) travelled to discover the beauties of Sri Lanka.
We saw the stupa/dagoba of this temple from a distance, walking on the beach and decided to visit it.
After climbing the stairs onto the rock, we were asked for a donation (the donationtickets go from 50-2000 roepies).
The temple is rather quiet with only local worshippers and from around the stupa you have a great view on the beaches and rough sea. When we were there it was very windy and the waves were huge!
The temple servant who gave us our blessings and let is ring the bell, asked for extra donations and was not satisfied with what we gave him...
