- KarenM1_101,042 contributionsMust see - stunningAs you approach the Abbey you get a jaw dropping view of its size and beauty. The Abbey is the only structure in view as you enter the area. You immediately see the stunning views of the mountain and the lake, which puts a huge focus on the Abbey as a centerpiece. Before visiting the Abbey, I suggest you first find your way to the shuttle bus and go immediately to the gardens. From the gardens, take the shuttle back where you can walk to the entrance to the Abbey. If you are strapped for time, you can then determine how much time to spend at the Abbey. The Abbey is very beautiful inside with lush furnishings. We made the mistake of visiting the abbey first and then headed towards the Gothic Church and Mausoleum, which are lovely but can be skipped if you are short on time. They are in the opposite direction from the gardens. We ended up getting on the shuttle to the gardens and by the time we got there we had to remain on the bus and return to the entrance, since our time was up. So, we missed the gardens completely. Our guide told us to grab something to eat at the café but since there were so many people visiting it was packed, and he ended up having to extend our time by an hour just so we could eat. There is a nice gift shop that we walked through quickly on our way out. Even if the crowds are smaller, everything is spread out, so you need at least 4 hours here and more if you plan to eat. Tip regarding toilet - there are some at the entrance when you arrive but there was always a long line. I suggest that you go into the Café or the Abbey. Since we did not visit the Gardens, I am sure there likely some there as well.Dear KarenM1_10, Thank you for visiting Kylemore Abbey & for taking the time to review us. - Gail VEverett, Washington367 contributionsA must stop to seea must stop if you are in the area. so much to offer. The Abbey is beautifully maintained and displays are wonderful. So many historical items in the Abbey. the Gothic Church was small but beautiful on it's own. The trails were peaceful relaxing to walk on. The mausoleum was interesting on its own. the Gardens and caretaker house give you a look into the past. This would be an excellent place to have pictures taken with many different background throughout the estate.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023

It has remained a working Abbey ever since and the entire place has been sensitively restored and renovated. The interior is beautiful as is the chapel. The Victorian Walled garden is spectacular and not to be missed. Allow 3 hours to see everything. We enjoyed the castle but loved the walled gardens, all of the green houses and structures as well as all of the trees. We were there for about two hours. - hoben57Houston, Texas113 contributionsNice but no bang for your buckIt's a lovely property with nice views but I don't think you get the bang for your buck. The abbey has nice history displaced inside but the rooms you see is limited, ie, no kitchen, bedrooms. The walled gardens are nice and allows for a leisurely stroll in a quiet setting. The bus service helps get you from the abbey to the gardens. The chapel which is a short walk from the abbey is actually more interesting than the house with it's architecture, stained glass windows, and roof gutter stone carvings.Dear 535Urbanc, Thank you for visiting Kylemore Abbey & for taking the time to review us. - KiamomPittsburgh, Pennsylvania349 contributionsGreat Day Out!My husband and I visited Kylemore Abbey while we were staying in Clifden during our visit to Ireland. There was so much to see, it was well worth the entrance fee. We spent quite a bit of time visiting the gardens. We also enjoyed walking on the triails on the grounds. We took the self guided tour of the mansion, which has many interesting artifacts and information boards detailing the history of the house , the history of the Benedictine nuns who run Kylemore Abbey. We ran out of time so were unable to visit the chapel. There are several places that sell refreshments throughout the property and a well stocked gift shop.Dear Kiamom, Thank you for visiting Kylemore Abbey & for taking the time to review us. - DadandCabCoffs Harbour, Australia1,302 contributionsBeautiful building and locationThe abbey is in a beautiful location and must be one of the most photogenic buildings in Ireland. There’s plenty of information about the history of the building as well as the history of the benedictine movement. Walks to and around the walled gardens are equally interesting and there’s even a shuttle bus to the walled gardens if you have mobility issues. A couple of hours well spent. - Lara SHershey, Pennsylvania197 contributionsLoved the Abbey! This was one of my favorite experiences of our trip!! It was worth the drive from Gallway for the scenery alone, but the abbey has a magical feel. We spent 3 hours here but could have stayed longer! The grounds are gorgeous, the guides were friendly, and the decorations in the castle were beautiful. We enjoyed walked around the gardens and were treated to a concert in the church. The shops full of handmade goods was fun. We really loved this visit! A must do for those in the area!Dear LaraS446, Thank you for visiting Kylemore Abbey & for taking the time to review us. - Ann Marie H1 contributionBest tour guide! Wonderful Experience!I visited Kylemore on New Year's Day with a friend and we both were hugely impressed with the talk delivered by Ann in the main hall. She was amazing. Her knowledge and obvious love Kylemore really made my day. She told all kinds of interesting anecdotes and even translated into French for another tourist. Unfortunately, the weather was terrible and we didn't realise there was so much to see and do. I would advise giving at least 4 hours to really see everything. Terrific experience. I would highly recommend a visit to Kylemore Abbey. It's a beautiful place and well worth the drive.
When we arrived we first went to the cafe where we were greeted by a woman taking contact details for tracing. We then queued up for some coffees and the same woman came over to advise that the customers were not adhering to social distancing. While I completely understand the necessity to do this, it was her manner which was the issue. She was quite abrupt and rude which you could tell everyone else picked up on. Later on we went to the visitor centre and queued up. I had booked the tickets online. When I got to the ticket desk it was the same woman from the coffee shop. I told her I had booked the tickets online and showed the confirmation. At this stage it was 20 to 4. She was extremely condescending and told me 3 times that the gates were closing as 4:45. I said that was fine. She had an attitude that I was under a compliment that we were allowed go in and told us we should have come earlier if we wanted to see the gardens and the Abbey. I would say this woman should NOT be in a customer facing job if she doesn't know how to deal with people in a friendly way. The other woman at the ticket desk on the other hand was extremely helpful and informative to the couple which were purchasing tickets. She explained what they could go and see while we were being berated for being here too late. It's a pity that this put a damper on our overall experience. Apart from this, I would highly recommend the visit.

I had been wanting to visit Kylemore for years and last summer I brought my mum. We drove over two and a half hours to get there and but it was absolutely worth it. I wouldn’t consider €14 in to be expensive. The toilets are clean and the view as you cross the bridge is jaw dropping. It’s so serene. We were advised there was a harpist performing in the chapel so we went there and listened for a little while before exploring the house. It’s really well done! You can take your time wandering and listening to the stories.
The shuttle bus to the walled garden is very busy but runs regularly so no issue. The gardens themselves are very peaceful - the whole place is just serene. We stopped in the cafe at the garden to have soup, sandwiches and cakes. A bit pricey but no more so than in other attractions! You have to expect to pay a little bit more in these kinds of places. The food was all fresh and we were happy with it! We spent about 3 hours in total at Kylemore and bought some of the homemade fudge on the way out - huge variety of flavours and well worth indulging.
Granted, we were extremely lucky with the weather as it was a warm sunny day with only one light shower, it would be a pity to get there with the rain teaming down because you wouldn’t be able to take your time enjoying the scenery. But it’s Ireland - you have to just go and hope for the best. We have some beautiful photos from the day and memories of a lovely day together. I would recommend Kylemore to anyone.

Visited Kylemore Abbey for the third time over maybe a period of 20 - 30 years. Have to admit I didn’t get it on the two previous visits but this time I fell in love! The walled garden and grounds are beautiful. Unfortunately we hadn’t time to go into the house itself. We arrived early and we were glad we left around lunch time because there was a large crowd waiting to get in. You can book your ticket in advance and then arrive any time during the day - you are not tied to a specific time. The smell of lavender coming out of the soapery was beautiful. Keep an eye out for the pigs - both real and ornamental! The chapel is amazing. The stone columns representing the four provinces of Ireland are beautiful. Restaurant very good and reasonably priced. Well worth a visit.

This was probably one of the best attractions we visited during our 2 week holiday in Ireland during April. It was a long 4 hr drive for us from Castlemartyr but it was worth it. The road to get to the Abbey was beautiful , full of lakes & mountains. Something that looked like somewhere in the USA/Canada that we have seen on TV/Vlogs.
The parking area is quite big & we quickly saw why as it got very busy very quickly even though it was a Sunday. Opening time is 10am & cost 15 euro pp which gives you access to everything.
We choose to do the Victorian Garden 1st & jumped on the waiting bus which runs every 10-15mins , its free. One could walk through very scenic woods but will take 20-30 mins depending on your fitness levels. The bus takes a few minutes. The gardens are wonderful & a number of flowers were starting to bloom as it was the beginning of spring. There are a couple of pigs in a pen nearby , can't remember their names now.
After the gardens we headed into the Abbey where you able to engage a guide should you have any questions. The inside is immaculate & loved the diningroom area.
We then headed for the Gothic church which is about a 5min walk from the Abbey . A small but intimate church.
The views along the lake are amazing & with the Abbey in the background it makes for fantastic photos. The best spot is close to the parking lot heading to the Abbey.
A Gift Shop & Cafe are also on site & a few restrooms across the property. The grounds are very neat & well maintained.

Kylemore Abbey and the beautiful Victorian Walled Garden were one of my favorite places we visited during our trip to Ireland last month. We arrived before all of the larger tours, so we were able to walk the grounds with virtually no one else around. We visited the Garden first and utilized the shuttle located near the entrance, which I would recommend doing as well. Even though getting to the gardens is walkable, it’s quite a distance from the main entrance/parking area. We saw the incredible Connemara ponies up close, as they were right near the fence when we arrived. They definitely put on a show for us! We took the shuttle bus back to the main entrance and walked the rest of the way to see the Abbey and the neo-Gothic church. They were only letting a certain amount of people inside the Abbey at once, but regardless, it was very crowded so we didn’t stay long. This is truly a stunning place to visit and one that I would highly recommend. Get there early if you can.

An absolute treasure. A beautiful and accessible spot, Kylemore Abbey is a wealth of history and a rural idyll. We went there as a group of 2 grandparents, 4 parents and 5 children 4 months to 8 years. There were generous and accessible toilets strategically placed near the entrance and at various other spots along the way which is a huge help for our diverse demographic!
The people working at the Abbey were hugely helpful and knowledgeable and clearly took great pride in their work. Aoife Nee, the guide tasked with managing the short queue going into the main house, was so generous with her in-depth knowledge of the history of the abbey and surrounding area and really helped to bring story to life. The exhibition inside the house is so well laid out with clever audiovisual displays to illuminate the history of various artefacts. The abbey itself is absolutely beautiful inside and out.
The restaurant has a huge range of high quality, delicious nutritious fresh food made on-site. Much of the ingredients come from the abbey’s farm. There are lots of picnic tables set up.
The alcohol gel stations are plentiful, working and kept stocked.
The gardens are fabulous…though the younger members of our party did not enjoy them so much. Feeding the ponies happens at 3.30 and the pigs at 12 noon and we’ll worth witnessing.
There is a shuttle bus between house and garden and it was great to save time so that we could enjoy the trails. The bus driver was so helpful and practical.
The mindful fairy trail is really lovely though our kids thought it too short!
The only thing we would have liked was a playground where the kids could burn off some energy as we did need to keep them in check so as not to disturb other guests. A playground or even a patch of ground where they could kick a ball would have made their day and allowed the adults a chance to do shifts with them and enjoy examining the gardens a little more. It’s just a suggestion for the future but this is an absolutely fantastic amenity and not to be missed. Thank you for a wonderful visit.

The gardens were spectacular. Well cared for with an attention to detail. The Abbey again is really special up close. We didn’t spend too much time inside it because of social distancing it felt awkward trying to enjoy the exhibits. I really enjoyed the gothic church it’s a beautiful building. Even the gift shop is great not too much paddy whackery and plenty of Irish crafts on show. Only regret is we didn’t have another few hours to wonder around the grounds. The admission goes into restoration and maintenance so well worth the fee. I highly recommend a visit.

We arrived just as the Abbey opened at 10am & so glad we did... Place was empty & had the lovely new woodland walks all to ourselves which we thoroughly enjoyed! Was sad to hear the hillside hike upto the statue is no longer accessible & hope it will be opened in future. By the time we left around 1pm, carpark and all facilities were wedged so definitely go early.
The walled gardens were a little underwhelming. I understand they try to keep foliage/flowers authentic to the early 1900s era but as it was Summer, I thought we would see more colour. Also, I feel the institution are missing a trick by not reinstalling the glasshouses which would make the gardens truly spectacular. A new monastery is being built yet parts of the original house/grounds are not sympathetically restored which does not tell the unique history of Kylemore. Tours/access to the old school buildings would also be very interesting & worth opening to public.
The Abbey itself is very impressive with good information provided although inside only a few rooms seem to retain any semblance of the original decor/layout. It seems that much has been changed to incorporate the video installations etc whereas it would be more impactful if the castle interior around the installations had been kept more authentic. At times it felt more like a museum than an historic castle.
Biggest disappointment was at the Gothic Church. Such a wonderful building was ruined by two hippie buskers who set up shop opposite the entrance door with their guitar. Not sure if staff were aware/permitted this but it definitely detracted from the experience.
In all, the Abbey is definitely worth a visit although not all aspects met expectation and somewhat overpriced (€10pp is more than adequate).
We spent an amazing 4 hours on a lovely sunny summers day. We started with morning coffee and home made cakes sitting outside looking at the beautiful scenery. It was so peaceful & we fed the little finches from our chairs. We then walked through the trees by the lake to the Victorian Walled Gardens which were resplendent with blooms, colour and smells. We fell in love with Gloria Summer & Ken Scamper the exotic pigs. Another walk to the Gothic Church which has been refurbished to an excellent standard. We couldn’t miss the Abbey House itself which is steeped in history. Another fine cup of coffee and a bit of retail therapy in the fantastic craft shop ended a most wonderful visit to this little gem.
Thanks for the lovely day and we really appreciated your Covid-19 precautions which were very well planned.

The Abbey is situated in a lovely, romantic lakeside setting. We visited on a wet day and the rain and mist just added to the atmosphere. You can go inside the Abbey although not all of it is open and what was, though very well displayed, was soon over.
On a nicer day you could happily amble around the grounds and gardens but it wasn't that kind of day so it was the gift shop (extensive) and cafe that received the rest of our attention.
The Abbey and grounds cost 15 euros to enter and, on a wet day I would almost be tempted to suggest you just admire the free (and best) view from the car park, then have a stop in the cafe and shop and head off and hold onto your money for another time.

We bought tickets when we arrived. We were there early, so I'm not sure what it might be like later in the day when tours arrive.

Can I purchase a ticket there or do I have to book online?
Written 30 July 2021
Hi, you can do either but we recommend online as it will make entry quicker on the day. Thank you for your question.

How long should I plan on being at Kylemore Abbey? It will be me and my daughter (14 years old) in July 2020. I dont mind seeing the inside, but I'm more interested in beautiful outdoor photos. So if seeing the inside at my own pace, i would imagine a quick walk thru would suffice...

I would say allow yourself as much time as possible the Abbey itself will take about 20-30 minutes then there is the gothic Church and mausoleum you can walk this as it is only a short walk then I would say head for the walled Gardens if you can walk it you should because if it is a brilliant sunny day you will get stunning photos of everything magnificent scenery that will give you both beautiful memories to treasure. Hope you have a wonderful time and welcome to Ireland in July 2020

Quite honestly. The best part is free.
When you get to the car park. Take photos across the lake, then walk toward the pay station taking more photos. Then save your money and leave.
You’ll only see 4 very ordinary rooms in the abbey (6 if they’ve completed restoration) and the gardens are ok, but definitely not worth the entry fee. Better natural scenery en-route!!

We won't have much time there - can one just look around outside & eat at the café without purchasing tickets
Written 22 February 2019
Of course. The cafe is accessible for public. They provide nice ambient and comfortable eating area and for those who prefer the cold outside table are most welcomed. Thanks for the question.

How long would it take for a group to just see the estate and church?
Written 5 January 2019
1 hour minimum. Can spend much more time depending on how much time you look around and take pictures.

How can I get there by public transport? I don't want to walk from Letterfrack along N59 because I think that could be too dangerous... Is there another opportunity without an organized bus tour?
Written 15 July 2018
Love Connemara Tours run a hop-on hop off bus service in the Connemara area which links Clifden, Letterfrack, Kylemore and Leenane. Call 095 22785

I was there this summer. The garden tour is on your own. The shuttle bus runs every 15 minutes if you don't want to walk or are running out of time. I believe the last bus is at 5:30.
