Regrettably, the earthquake has left the area with a Level 3 safety requirement. As of the date of posting, you cannot get within 3 km of the active caldera. The museum is open but you really need a car to do this easily as the...More

The voyage to Aso from Kumamoto is a pleasant trip through the countryside on a quaint train. The town of Aso sits within a vast "caldera", and the volcano atop Mount Aso is the largest active volcano in Japan. At the time of our visit,...More

The closest spot next to the Aso volcano. Interesting film about the volcano and its surrounding. Must try ice-cream.

The museum was disappointing, as the real time feed was simply a feed from the parking lot towards the mountain, something you could see yourself from the same parking lot by the museum. It was disappointing as they advertised a real look into the crater....More

Visited on a freezing cold day. Museum seemed ok - very little in English and we don't read Japanese! Interesting film about the volcano and its surrounds. Several restaurants and shops in the complex. Cable car at the volcano has been suspended due to volcanic...More

Informative about volcanoes and great for children. Very near the Volcano. Although I wished we could walk nearer the crater, it was closed due to recent volcano eruption recently.

Rather disappointed at the old facility. Not much to look around. You can read a pamphlet of the Aso volcano info instead of making the trip to the museum.

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
Are there lockers or storage room at the Aso Volcano Museum where I can leave my small luggage while I tour the Museum and the surrounding area? I will arrive at the Museum by bus from Kumamoto so I will not go to the Aso Train Station. Thank you for your help.
