The ferry is reasonably priced and on the day we took it not very crowded, although I imagine this changes with the mid-summer months. Some interesting pictures and historical information on the ferry, as well as good views of the islands, lake, and bay.

are pets allowed on the ferry, if so do they have to be in a crate are only a leash

On board, in a designated area, they need to be on a leash or in a carrier...that's the official word.
