This museum is off the beaten path, but well worth it! The artifacts were quite interesting, and the story of the Battle of Marathon is amazing. There is a covered excavation site in a building beside the museum (the small entrance fee covers both). The air conditioning was wonderful on a very hot day. The staff were kind & informative. There is an Athenian burial mount about 5 minutes away (by car) which is worth seeing, too (same entrance ticket for both).

The museum is very small but contains excellent artifacts. The employees are something else. They live in their own world. Not a smile not a hello not a word of assistance. They follow you around like there is a chance that someone will pick up the huge statues and carry it outside. Not one armed guard either in case someone decides to do such a thing. All museum guards are cut from the same cloth. They are rude and borderline obnoxious with made up rules of no pictures allowed whenever they want in whatever areas they want to enforce the ridiculous rules. Prices for tickets are obnoxious. In the end a museum like for the area of Marathon where one of the most important battles took place contains absolutely nothing from the battle. The tymvos is a pile of dirt surrounded by trees and a newer statue of a hoplite. Absolutely nothing else to see. Cleanest bathrooms anywhere though. And look at the pictures below of the nice car artifact in front of the museum.

Small museum that houses an excellent collection. A collection of items and trophies from the Battle of Marathon as well from an Egyptian temple found nearby. Outside the museum there are circle graves of prominent citizens of that area.

Just wanted to let you know that the museum is open. The TripAdvisor site stated that it’s temporarily closed but we went to check out anyway and found it open.
It’s worth seeing in a combination with other landmarks nearby (Marathonas battle site/Tumulus, ancient graveyards) as it helps to form a more complete picture.

Visited this Museum along with the battle site and Tomb at Marathon. This museum had some really go exhibits of Greek and Roman origin. The burial site neary is also a good visit.
To visit both sites was only 6 Euro

Marathon is a global symbol....but in my opinion here at Marathon site it is not celebrated enough to make the glory of Filippides shining. Much more should and could be done to make this hidden gem known to the world.
In any case...it is relatively easy to get to Marathon from Athens...so I suggest a visit to feel and vibe the beauty of the Marathon hill and the surrounding areas. And after that relax at Marathon Beach with beautiful sceneries and good food.

A small museum but wonderful artifacts well worth a visit. It is so interesting you will find out lots of information about the Marathon area and its history. We went there in a taxi, I'm not sure we would have found it on foot and also it was far too hot to walk any distance. We visit the Marathon Tumuli and paid 6 euros each but that price included the museum so excellent value for the two sites. Staff very friendly and helpful.

A nice museum with many interesting objects. Not easy to find though. We tried to walk from Nea Makri, took us 1,5 hours and the help of Google Maps. A guide showed us a protected bury chamber on the museum area, a nice gesture.

Pass by there with the Classic Marathon race. Lots of people and some dressed with the ancient battle armors and swords! Great memories...

IMHO, one of most known battles in human history deserves a better monument(s). The first thing we saw upon arrival to the Trophy of Marathon and Marathon Battlefield were homeless (though very friendly) dogs and mud. Unfortunately, both places, especially the Trophy looked almost abandoned. After listening to my stories about Marathon for a while, ny son was visibly upset after the visit. Having said that, perhaps we should be grateful for any recognition, as there is not entry on TropAdvisor forthe "Leonidas Monument".

What is the best place to get off the public bus from Athens please, and will it be easy to get a taxi to the museum from the bus stop?
