Utstein Monastery is Norway's only well-preserved medieval monastery. The buildings were originally intended as a royal residence, but an Augustinian monastery was founded there in around 1265. After the reformation in 1537, the monastery and its property were returned to the crown, and it subsequently came into private ownership. The property has been in public ownership since 1935. Today, it is run as a museum and conference centre. Concerts are also held there. The cultural landscape around the monastery is protected by law.

Had a nice guided tour trough the monastery in December. A 40 min trip from Stavanger centre. Nice to see such an old building, in such a good standard - and still in use for weddings and church. The guide have stories about the monks, slaves and love stories. - and the ghost! You can even stay the nights here,... More

Really enjoyed an entertaining guided tour. Charming location, very friendly service in the restaurant, delicious food. Only gripe is that food could have been warmer (suggestion to restaurant - plate warmers help a lot if other options are not viable). Skilled chefs, friendly and helpful, relaxed service staff. Charming location.

We visited Utstein Kloster because of a family connection. It is a wonderfully restored site with all sorts of historical connections. My ancestors originated at one of the farms owned by the kings who used this castle as a royal residence - later owned by the church. It is one of the oldest abbeys in Norway. It is a very... More

We visited the Utstein Kloster as part of our shore excursion during our Norway cruise. We were so glad we had a chance to make a visit to Utstein Kloster. The drive to Utstein from Stavanger port area was absolutely beautiful. Our tour began with an organ recital in the room leading to the chapel. We had some Norwegian pancakes... More

Unfortunately the monastery was closed when I arrived but the history is everywhere and very tangible. Well worth the drive.

Maybe unique of it's kind in Norway due to the good shape the monastery still is in. It's history traces back to the Viking era and might have ties to the famous Harald Hårfagre. What a great little 25 min drive from Stavanger city centre :)

If you don't have a strong interest in monasteries or the medieval period or renovated historical sites, Utstein will not convert you. I actually enjoyed the lovely setting, but Norway is full of stunning sites. The two reasons I didn't give this a high rating as an attraction is the experience of the site itself and the problem that if... More

it is a beautiful construction from the mid 1200's. the grounds are well kept and the nearby scenery makes up for the distance from the center, +- miles. i'd say it will be a little boring for kids but they will enjoy it a little!

We were lucky to be with a business group which planned dinner at the Abbey. I think this can only be done by pre-planed special arrangement. It was fantastic. The Abbey itself is out of the way and needs a car. It is a beautifully preserved abbey in a pastoral setting. Still functions as a Church. Worth a visit if... More
