Just stunning when the sun peeks out with ice on the top. A view you could not get tired of seeing. Good viewing of this around the foreshore walk with a few good places to take photos. Loads of sandflies.

This is an absolutely lovely peak, that - depending on the weather - you can view while taking a cruise in Milford sound.
The peak is covered with ice several months a year, but even watching it bare was a beautiful experience.

The boat trip along Milford Sound took us to Mitre Peak which to say the least is immensely impressive. Unable through disability to approach it on land, the only alternative is the small boat. On the way it passes several waterfalls which multiply after rainfall. The boat trip provided lunch and emerged from the Sound to view it from the sea when it clear how easy it must have been for James Cook to miss it as it is hidden by a pronto ray of land. On the way back to harbour, we were left at the research station which enabled an undersea view of part of the sound. Collected later by another vessel, due consideration was given by all the crew for my disability. The whole trip was enjoyable in brilliant sunshine and enabled a breath of fresh sea air to ventilate any cobwebs that might have been lurking! A great trip highly recommended for families and the old folk.

Rated Number 1 World tourist attraction and deserves the rating. Visiting on a 120.000 ton cruise ship, bad weather, we saw little, except for, at the one time, fourteen other tour vessels, four fixed wing aircraft, three helicopters, five kayaks, two keeler yachts, a pilot boat and two fishing boats. For what is promoted as the most pristine, the most remote and the mist beautiful spot on the planet, we experienced "Grand Central Station" in the rush hour. We are now steaming on to our next victim, trying a massive stream of sulphur filled exhaust gases. Sorry fur seals, sorry little penguins, sorry leopard seals, sorry all you other beautiful birds, at least you can be proud that you do your natural bit for the tourism industry. NZ must start to watch it's future for the Golden Egg of tourism. More and more we hear the clatter of helicopters and smell the exhaust stacks on the money-makers/exploiters who drive the industry.

Amazing views near the Mitre Peak Lodge. Try to say around here overnight to get good views at sunrise and sunset. Most visit Milford Sound for the 2 hours cruise. This place is magical at sunrise and sunset. Given the weather cooperates. Even so, if it rains, there are waterfalls everywhere. Very special place.

Danger. People have died on exposed upper sections. Class three areas require rope climbers shoes and experience and skills to be safe. Rescue would be extremely difficult if not impossible.

At nearly 1.7kms high, Mitre Peak stands in full view (on clear days at least) from the beach at Milford Sound. Makes for fantastic photos!

This is the quintessential mountain in New Zealand. Most photographed etc. It is spectacular. Not to be missed. Hopefully you will see it in it's entirety. Usually the weather does not permit.

Nothing says "Milford Sound" like the view of Mitre Peak. It is the picture that always comes up if you search "Milford Sound". Simply stunning. You can get some amazing pictures from the area right between the Car Park and the covered walkway to the Cruise Terminal.
