The signs says 45 minutes, but it’s actually less than 10 to the lake, and even if you do the whole circuit it will take well under half an hour.
A nice bit of bushland brings you to the lake and lovely views in both directions. Walk towards the creek for a lovely quiet spot.
As this is attached to the spectacular flowers at cascade creek, it’s an easy addition to any stop here.

We stopped off to do the shorter Lake Gunn walk visiting the lake and doing the loop.

This was visited during our Trips and Tramps Milford Sound Tour.

Our guide was good at stopping the birdlife and pointing out the various types of birds.

Its a pretty and scenic area.

Arriving at the Cascade Creek car park (toilet here) we started the 30 minute loop track to Lake Gunn. Some of the Southern Beech trees in this forest are at least 600 - 700 years old and are amazing. The walk to the lake was easy and we were joined by a couple of cheeky NZ Robins. Well worth the stop to see these giant trees.

We took our campervan down the short gravel track to a turn around area near the lakes edge. Toilets are available there among pristine bush with native birds, we saw a robin, wood pigeon and a bellbird in the short time we visited. The view was fantastic

Heading to Milford Sound the turnoff to Lake Gunn is on the left (or on the right if leaving Milford Sound for Te Anau). There you can do an easy 20-minute loop walk through an eerie, moss-covered ancient beech forest. Half way along the track is Lake Gunn with its splendid scenery (definite photo opportunity). Great to stretch the legs and breathe in the fresh air. [TIP: wear ankle/leg/arm protection because the 000's of sandflies will bite and you'll be scratching for days!]

As you drive along the Milford Sound Hwy, feel free to stop at the South end of Lake Gunn where you will find a beautiful nature track leading to the Lake that is mind bugling and gives you the impression you are in a scene of Lord of the Ring or a haunted forest. Highly recommended and save about 30 minutes to complete this loop.

The nature walk is an easy 30 minute walk that loops around and takes you by the lake. Along the way they have informative signs to read. We loved how peaceful it was in the forest. Worth a stop!

Pleasant walk amidst nature, Lake Gunn is nice but wouldn't consider the walk a must do. Takes less than an hour to complete.

Be sure to stop here on your way back from Milford Sound. A quick 45 minute level walk takes you into an enchanted green experience with think rich moss. The moss is more prevalent in the beginning of the walk so be sure to take lots of pictures. We walked the day bonfire St. Paddy’s Day so posting pictures on line was great!.
