Good lighted cave route. Most part of the cave route have above ankle depth water. So, need to travel on bare foot or use wellingtons.

Caves with naturally developed staleglits and stalegmites over thousands of years.
The road to the caves is quite scenic and enjoyable.
The caves are enjoyable too. However we had seen such caves in China and NZ; they were far superior in comparison.
When in North East, the visit you these caves is definitely recommend

After visiting the seven sisters fall in Sohra we proceeded to visit Mawsmai cave. After browsing through several stalls outside the caves selling Khasi products and considerably insipid meal that was available around we proceeded to visit the caves.
After purchasing the requisite tickets we tried to enter the caves. It was drizzling outside at that time. We thought that the musty smell at the entrance is due to the atmospheric condition. At that time we noticed many visitors retreating. Some of the visitors even told us that it is not worth getting inside the dark and uneven area.
Despite the warning, we mustered up the courage to wade through the slippery entrance. Before we could proceed a little further, there was a horrible stench. After a bad meal in the nearby restaurant, the foul smell was nauseating. Hence we decided against wading through the puddle of stinking water.

It was raining when we visited the caves and were in two minds to go in or not. But our guide Wesh recommended that we see this cave with water which is also equally delightful. Since he was our guiding angel we trusted him and got into the water, we saw many ppl coming back saying its slippery. With shoes in our hands we glided through the dark icy waters and through the ups and downs of the stones in the cave. We were so glad we did this walk thru the waters and the caves were beautiful ! Its a must visit when in Sohra. Equally beautiful is the walk through the dense patch of tress. At the end of the exit you will see Kasi costumes on hire, go ahead and wear them for photographs for Rs.100 only. The caves are not recommended for elders.

These stalactite caves, are a very interesting sight and a must visit when you go to Sohra, which is also known as Cherrapunji. The main cave is large enough to walk around in, but there are some narrow passages which we avoided

Nice experience but one has to be very careful because the floor is slippery with water. Very narrow at places so not recommended for persons with knee and back problems or people who do not like narrow dim places.

It was my first cave hiking and I thoroughly enjoyed. It was indeed an unique experience. Don't carry too much things to carry, caves are very narrow at places with dim lighting. The second cave is mind-blowing but not recommended for seniors with knee issues, very small kids and people who are claustrophobic.

Mawsmai cave is beautiful with number of caves and huge in some places and in some caves places u have to crawl but it’s exciting and MUST visit if you are coming to Cherrapunji. Nearby 7 sister waterfalls is there. We went in a day trip in February 2022 from Guwahati and came back in evening.
The caves have limestone deposits and adequately lighted inside. The stones are uneven so places your feet carefully in some places it’s very polished also so can be slippery when water is there during rains.
This place is one of the most attractive tourist spot and lots of tourists visit this place. As such there is huge parking facility small shops for selling souvenirs and adequate tourist amenities of food , toilets all are available ..
now coming to the caves :-
Meghalaya has lots of caves and mostly all caves are having limestone formations

We saw a lot of families with young kids and they managed it. I am not sure how exposed are your kids to caves and hikes. Just make sure that they are dressed sensibly. Be prepared to carry them if they get scared of the dark. I think it’s something as a parent you know your kids better.
How many steps are there to reach up to the entrance of the cave

Not sure about Arwah caved but the other 4 can be covered in a day.
Plan at least 2 to 3 days at cherapunjee, there are many other beautiful places to be covered here.
I'm planning a trip to Shillong-cherrapunji-Dawki-mawlynlong in June last week. Given that it's monsoon time, will it be possible to visit the waterfalls in Sohra, Mawsmai caves and the living root bridge? Please provide some help in planning the itinerary..
Thank you.

Monsoon is a perfect time for waterfalls. You gonna love Cherrapunji. You can cover Mawsmai caves and living root bridge (it depends upon rain, as the steps gonna be very slippery. You will love the trekking towards living root bridge Try to go slowly and carry water, chocolates and dry fruits.
You can cover Dawki from Shillong in a day trip. Also, try to visit India-Bangladesh border and Shnongpdeng. Shnongpdeng is famous for water sports. It is 5-8 kms from Dawki.

You can turn back, depends on how many people are behind you. If you have claustrophobia then I suggest you don't go in. Not recommended for elderly people also.
