Visited Kohima on the 80th anniversary of the battle in memory of my father Major Arthur Marment 4/15 Punjabis. Yai planned everything perfectly and covered every asoect of the context, build up, commanders, troops, weapons, weather of the battle itself. We saw and walked many of the festures and visited the Commonweath war graves on the Site of the Battle of the Tennis Court. His knowledge was immense and he had digested my fathers war diaries so was able to cross reference them.
He could not have been more informed or friendly and i can well see why he is the most respected guide covering this area.

My wife and I recently completed a 7 day, 8 night tour of Imphal and Kohima battlefields with Battle of Imphal Tours, guided by the expert Manipur guide Yai.

As a person with a keen interest in WW2 military history I wanted to go with someone genuine who could really give us the full experience, who knows the battlefields, plus what life is like for those who come from this beautiful part of the world. It became evident Yai was that person.

From the very start Yai was professional, engaging and honest as we worked together on the itinerary. As much as I could do 7 days of purely battlefield history that would of tipped my wife over the edge so I asked if he could do a mix of WW2 history with the local cultural sites. This was no problem and he was ensured this was included to give us a nice balance within our tour daily.

From our arrival into Imphal until we left Kohima, Yai worked tirelessly to ensure we were looked after. As someone with a good grasp on the overall battle I wanted a guide who I could get the other smaller details etc that you only gain from seeing the ground and from someone who knows the battlefields. Yet again Yai was that person as I probed him with random questions daily on the battles that occurred and the people and regiments involved.

The cultural aspects included in the tour were fantastic. Expertly aided by Kevin our driver who brought his Naga heritage into all the sites and villages we visited. This was easily my wife's favourite part and made our trip complete.

Finally, we managed to be in Kohima for the 80th anniversary of the siege starting at Kohima and Yai was able to include the memorial service held at the cemetery into our last day of the tour. It could not of been a better way to end our time in Kohima and it was great to see Yai in his element engaging with key VIPs and ensuring that this important part of India's history is remembered to not just foreigners, but also locals as well.

Thanks Yai for all you did for Sue and I on our tour, easily the best battlefield tour I've done to date.

I could not recommend Yai more highly.

Having originally planned to visit both Imphal and Kohima, the local situation in Manipur obliged Yai to restrict our tour to Kohima plus a stay in a Naga Village. Yai could not have done more for us: he came to collect us in Guwahati, from where we travelled together by train to Dimapur and on by road to Kohima. Kevin was our excellent chauffeur, often on difficult roads. Our Kohima tour covered all the important sites, with Yai building up a picture of the development of this complicated battle : at each stop along the way Yai, whose detailed knowledge of military history is very extensive, would always provide further relevant and insightful detail. This inevitably led to stimulating discussions. In addition to our having the certainty that we were in the hands of the top expert guide, both Yai and Kevin were perfect gentlemen in whose company it was a pleasure to spend time. Our final two days in Knonoma gave us a unique glimpse of the was of life in a Naga village. Anyone looking to tour these battlefields with the top guide need look no further than Yai at Battle of Imphal tours. A first class experience

We had the most amazing trip with Yai (Battle of Imphal Tours). His military history knowledge is superb and we visited and saw areas that we would not have seen if we had done the trip independently. Not only did we see areas of historical importance , we also visited different villages in Nagaland so the trip also had an excellent cultural aspect and the scenery was beautiful . A thank you to Kevin for this as well . Would thoroughly recommend Battle of Imphal Tours. A huge thank you from Jane and Richard.

A hugely successful and entertaining trip with a real gentleman and an expert. Yai met me at the airport with a traditional gift and his knowledge and experience was first class. I would recommend him to anyone.

We did a 5 night tour with Imphal Walks and Yai, flying from Delhi to Dimapur, staying at Kohima for 2 nights, then driving down to Imphal for 3 nights, including a night at Gabby's on the Shenam Ridge. This trip was perfect. We were mainly doing the trip to see where my father fought in WW2, on the Shenam Ridge, SE of Imphal, but we were also fascinated to learn about and see the Naga and Manipur culture. The Ladies Market in Imphal is not to missed, and its a very good place to buy shawls and saris. Yai is a brilliant guide. Hugely knowledgeable, nice sense of humour, tireless, and very flexible. The time flew by too fast. His driver Farouk was also excellent and incredibly helpful. I can 100% recommend! Feel free to ask me questions. (Our children were actually in their early 20's but that's not an option on TripAdvisor!). They loved it.

My wife and I visited Imphal and Manipur in February, 2023.

After considerable reading and research by way of preparation, we decided to contact Yaiphaba Kangjam - "Yai" - of "Battle of Imphal Tours."

It was an inspired decision. After ongoing discussions and consultations over many weeks and months - courtesy of WhatsApp - Yai and ourselves agreed on an itinerary which covered all the important sites and areas about which one had read so much and which played such an important part in what became known as the Battle of Imphal between March and July, 1944.

We spent a week with Yai and went out every day with him from Imphal visiting different areas and locations in the city and across Manipur. Yai and his driver, Farooq, looked after us superbly; nothing was too much trouble for them and we undoubtedly saw and learnt so much more than we would otherwise have done by ourselves as a result of being with Yai.

He has an unrivalled knowledge of the Battle of Imphal as well as the whole of what came to be recognised as the Burma Campaign and enables one to visit and see all the very important locations and sites across the Imphal Valley and further afield which played such an important role in the conflict.

It is also abundantly clear that Yai quite rightly takes immense pride in showcasing all that the beautiful state of Manipur has to offer any visitor and he is very flexible in adapting programmes and itineraries to suit appropriately.

We were privileged to be able to spend time in Yai's company. It was a week of enjoyment and learning and we were so fortunate that we discovered Yai and Battle of Imphal Tours. We will never forget the time which we spent with Yai and unreservedly recommend Yai and his Tour Company to any future prospective traveller and visitor to Imphal and Manipur.

Yai took us on an amazing six days around the Kohima Battlefield, including a two day excursion out to the East to Jessami and Khorasom. He is incredibly well informed, but also eager to pick up new information and mould his own understanding further. My wife's grandfather was heavily involved in the campaign, and seeing the places he fought and led was a wonderful experience, enhanced by the insights and experience Yai provides.

He managed to strike the balance between insight and interrogation of the military history of the area, and allowing time to stop and drink in the sheer majesty of the scenery. Regardless of the military connections it is breathtakingly stunning and practically unspoiled. We got the sense that Yai was enjoying this as much as we, and that he is deeply proud of his part of the world.

Travelling is also something of an adventure, as there are not really any detailed maps, so one is reliant upon our friends at Google, whose last satellite pass was some years ago. There has been material and ongoing investment in the road infrastructure, which is shrinking the remoteness of locations. We encountered an amazing new highway from Pfutsero to Phek, that features not at all on Google, but the Phek to Jessami road (which does) was impassable. Yai was senstive to the issues of the changing road network, and of course, perfectly good roads can be closed by landslides all too often. There is therefore quite a bit of research required to determine what the best route is between any two points, and this is often not what a self respecting crow might choose.

On this point, I would also profer a major thank you to Farouk, our driver. He did an awful lot of driving along what were often extremely challenging surfaces, with precipitate drops mere feet away, and some of the more erratic (and acoustic) road users coming from all directions, and he absolutely nailed it.

There was a G20 ministerial summit in Kohima during our visit, so roads were often blocked, and plans had to be changed on the fly. There was much activity at the HornBill Grounds preparing for an event, so the WW2 museum was officially closed, but we were able to get in as Yai knew a couple of the folk involved (it's a really good display). He also helped us see the conflict from the Japanese perspective (he has been to Japan lecturing) seeing General Sato's Headquarters, and the Japanese Memorial behind the Catholic Cathedral (which itself was gearing up for Easter). He takes these kinds of hitches in his stride.

At a base practical level Yai also has a good nose for where good food will be available (oh my lord, the samosas!) and also where there are serviceable toilets, a matter of some import. We also felt completely safe throughout.

So this was a great trip, but at a deeper level Yai is keeping the military history of the area (and he is perhaps even more expert on the Imphal aspects of the conflict) alive, whilst also pushing recognition of the area as a destination on the basis of its beauty and its culture.

We can only give him our highest recommendation. Thank you for looking after us, and thank you for looking after your homeland.

Our trip with Yai was excellent. He found the spot where my father won his MC suring the battle of Imphal and also gave us a comprehensive tour of both the Imphal and Kohima battle sites. I can recommend Battle of Imphal Tours most highly to anyone interested in discovering more about the Burma campaign and the “forgotten” 14th Army

The tour was excellent. My guide Yai has a passion for his subject and no stone is left unturned. I chose an eight day tour, and in addition followed in the footsteps of my father R W Kennard MC who fought for with the 1st Battalion Seaforths during the months of the battle. Yai was thorough and unstinting in this my personal quest and we sought out remote villages where my father had been engaged. Yai was extremely well informed and always patient, courteous, and sensitive. I cannot recommend Battle of Imphal Tours more strongly.
