This 500 year mother's market is amazing. Run by all women traders. So friendly and warm experience. True example of women power. If you are in Imphal this should be on your bucket list. Live example of hard work.

The concept of Ima women market is unique in that more than 3,000 women run this market, earn livelihood for themselves and bread for their families and show to the world that women are more than equal in economic activities. This is an example that if women get an opportunity they can show that they are more than equal in business acumen, hard work and economic activities.
Hearing of this market, I made it a point to visit this glorious place though I had nothing to buy. It was so pleasing to see women empowerment in action. Nowadays different sections of this market sell vegetables, fruits, fishes and household groceries, handloom items and other home requirements.
A must visit place for all those who love women emancipation, empowerment and dignity to them.

Never thought you could find so many ladies selling produce - cane baskets, shawls, bed-covers, fruits, vegetables, fish - fresh and dry, currency - all under one roof (or what used to be one roof). The one place where you can find women holding their ground with their stated price, instead of succumbing to the haggling of other women (something that's more common experience)!
If you are just wandering around and looking for some colour or if you have a couple of hours to spend or if you want to pick up some neat souvenirs for home - this is the place to go!

This Keithel or market is unique one as only women are the shopkeepers here . There are three or four such large buildings where they sell fashionable clothing as well as dresses and unique woollen hand woven bed covers and towels. Even the menders and tailors in this market are all women only. Local Meitei women are the shop keepers .
The architecture of these buildings are unique of Manipuri style itself. There is a temple inside the market. The deities are called ' Ema Emoinu Lairembi and her husband Lairemba '.
In front of these buildings vegetables, fresh fish and flowers are also sold everyday at flee markets by the local women only. This flee market covers a large area. A large variety of vegetables and fish are available in this market. This market remains open even on Sundays. Actually I witnessed more rush during Sundays than on weekdays. On Sundays this flee market looks like a ' Mela '. The local Meitei women are very friendly indeed . Although they understand business well as they are doing that generations after generations, they help you get your own choice in a very amicable manner.
There are small snacks shops in this flee market which are also run by women. They sell tasty vegetable and egg ' Pakodas ' and other snacks with tea .
Imphal is connented by road with all the North Eastern States and by Air with other cities like Kolkata , Guwahati etc.

The market is set up early, about 5 am, by women who come from the villages and the town. All shopkeepers are women, selling ritual items for Vaishnavites, clother, handlooms, fresh produce, grain, dried fish and other house hold needs. The women bargain and the price can be negotiated for everything. the handloom clothes are superb, as are the pickles and local confectionery available. A few stalls sell hot food too. Chanced upon curios like recycled cans converted to lamps with a wick. The women invariably wear the Vaishnavite 'tilak' of chandan and sindoor on the forehead and look very pretty.
The place is a must-see.

Two buildings on either side of a busy market road. Each building has a wide space that is occupied by several scores of vendors selling all manner of things: food, clothing, furnishings, accessories, items of worship...basically anything imaginable. A busy market such as this is bound to have a certain electrifying buzz but what makes Ima thrum is the fact that it's an all-women market. Yes, all the shopkeepers here -- about 3,000 I was told -- are women. Some matronly, some flirtatious, some stern, some relenting but women all. Even if shopping is not on your agenda, do make time for this place. It's absolutely riveting.

Ima translate to mother. This is an all women's market mostly in their late fifties except for one guy who sells fruits in one corner of the market. You can shop for vegetables, fruits, local art, handloom, clothes, fishes and at a good price. I mostly visit it for veggies and the local weed. Good stuff.
To haggle with ladies for a bargain is hard and prove a testing ground for you. Don't worry.. go ahead and haggle. You'll enjoy it. All in all it gives you a good experience of the different temperaments of the people here. An experience that you need to have.

It's a good place to purchase some artifacts from Manipur, but most striking thing about this place is that the whole market (excluding a few shops) is run by women. Well this was not unique to this place in Manipur, I found women on forefront in almost everything here in Manipur.
