Story goes that Suraj Singh, ruler of Gwalior once gone on hunting. He felt thirsty in the forest and asked a sage, Gwalipa for water. The sage directed him to this pond. The king quenched his thirst. To his surprise, the king who was suffering from leprosy was cured of after drinking water from this pond. He beautified this pond and it was named after him as "Suraj kund". In the middle of the pond there is a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is connected by a passege (small bridge) from one end. On the other end of the pond small temple dedicated to Sun God. There is no idol of Sun but there is a bronze symbol of sun with a diameter of 5-10 cms. and flames all around, mounted on a small dais, in the sanctum sanctorium. This suraj kind is in square shape of about 100'x100' with lots of lotus in it. This is about 2 kms. from the fort on the way to Gurudwara.

This site does not look appealing from the road but is worth a stop although it looks dirty and over grown.
Surajkund is an old reservoir. According o legend a hermit named Gwalipa who lived in the grounds of the Fort cured Surij Sen of leprosy by giving him a drink from the water tank (Suraj Kind). The legend continues that the waters have magical powers.
The Kund is surrounded by attractive gardens and the ruins of numerous temples,
It is a quiet location and not very bus

The pond is seen as you drive by the fort. More or less was covered by weeds and we could see water lilies here and there. Was told that there is a Siva linga in the center of the pond.
