A Spectacular Botanical Garden and Wildlife Park

Open to the public since the 1st April 2001, the Botanical Gardens at Deshaies are a recent creation. This park, whose youth is imperceptible, has very quickly imposed itself as the place to be for nature enthusiasts and lovers of tropical plants.

Situated on the windward coast of Basse-Terre, 100m in altitude up above the town of Deshaies, the garden stretches out over 5 hectares of sloping mountainside. Its favourable location guarantees beautiful views over the coast and an unrivalled vantage-point overlooking the bay of Deshaies. The site was already home to a nursery created by Guy Blandin, a plant-lover who brought rare and unknown plant species from his travels around the world back to Guadeloupe. Many of them unfortunately disappeared when Cyclone Hugo hit and severely damaged the island in 1989.

The humorist Michel Colluci, also known as Coluche, acquired the property in 1979. A few years later, in 1985, he invited his friend Michel Gaillard, an interior landscaper in mainland France, to set up his nursery there in exchange for taking care of the property's garden. A year later, the death of Coluche brought the future of the property back into question.

Michel Gaillard bought back the property in 1991 to honour the memory of his friend, with the idea in mind of creating a botanical garden. This risky and ambitious project required several years of planning, of research into its feasibility and then of execution. The garden was finally brought about in accordance with Michel Gaillard's and the landscaper Samuel Craquelin's plans.

Over the course of the path which snakes its way through the gardens, visitors today discover a world of real abundance: a world with 800 species of plant all brought together, with several animal species, which were introduced much to the delight of children, and with the most spectacular and unexpected landscapes following one after the other.

Tourists are invited on an unforgettable walk amidst fifteen or so different scenes.

Beautifully cared for gardens and arboretum

Well laid out gardens which include parrot enclosure, coy ponds, and waterfall. Good restaurant overlooking pond. Snack bar also on site. Worth a visit.

Nice botanical gardens. Unfortunately all the signs describing the plants and flowers are in French, which is great for the majority of the visitors on Guadeloupe. We are English speaking so the information was clearly lacking.... If the signs would have been in English this review would have been a 5. One recommendation is to have .50 euro coins to... More

Plenty of parking and an incredible collection of orchids, tropical plant and trees. Nice walking path to view them all. The sound system was not the most efficient and I gave up using it - it was also heavy and clumsy. Great restaurant.

You could easily spend 2 hours walking on the beautifully shaded, paved walkways viewing beautiful orchids, tropical trees and flowers, and a few parrots. It is well marked but all the descriptive signs are in French, however, the beauty is enough to catch and keep your attention. There are pergolas or covered areas for the tropical showers that may come,... More

The gardens are about 5 minutes drive south of Deshaies, with plenty of parking available. Also on a bus route, but didn't see much evidence of any frequent service running. You do not have to queue to purchase tickets from the manned counter. As you go into the reception entrance there is an automtic ticket machine on the left hand... More

The Jardin Botanique has good parking and a striking collection of plants in a pleasing setting. We saw beautiful palm trees, orchids, and many things I could not begin to name. My big regret was not bringing more change. For 50 centimes you can feed the koi, and they love it! They go wild for it. Also for 50 centimes... More

Granden is beautiful, with thousands of plants, flowers. However for me it was a little bit boring. There is only one path - all visitors go on the same way. No place for an adventure, to discover a hidden path etc. There are parrots on two dedicated places. The first one is a big bird cage with small parrots and... More

Overall we liked the visit of this well kept garden in Guadeloupe. It is kind of pricey and rather small for that. Similar attractions in Martinique are a better.

This is one of the nicest botanical gardens you will ever visit. On top of that the views are magnificent and the flora and fauna are great. This botanical garden has the usual array of plants, trees and flowers, but it also features some goats that are extra friendly and love the attention. The gardens also feature some gorgeous birds,... More

If you love flowers you will be enchanted by this garden. It is very well laid out and if you follow a guided path you will find something interesting and fascinating at every turn.
