I took a kayak river course with my partner during our stay. The scenery was mediocre but it is dirty as it seems to have been polluted by the household and restaurant nearby

It was just magical travelling down the river with fireflies blinking along the banks and under a cool starry night. The boatman skillfully steered the boat very near the low-lying branches to attract the fireflies to his special lantern. The ride was around 90 minutes long and we enjoyed every minute of the tour.

We booked a mangrove tour with Hafiz for the morning. We were joined by a Club Med Discovery guide with 2 guests from club Med.

I did not find the tour interesting as we were just cruising the mangrove swamps without much commentary on the wildlife in the area.

We had to prompt the guide with questions, even then, some of he cant answer but have to ask the boatman.

Only the eagle eye boatman pointed out sleepy mangrove snakes, crabs & a few birds.

I found that it was not worth the RM45 per person for an hour of a boat ride.

Go only if nothing better to do.

It's a nice area to visit for an afternoon, to see the river and explore the area. Still very quiet, and not all attractions/activities are open yet.

Hafiz River Activities provide mangrove and firefly tours. We went on the former with kids and had an absolutely wonderful time. 1.5 hours, for RM80 for an adult and child pair. The guy has the eyes of an eagle, spotting animals we couldn’t see such as monitor lizards and snakes (Mangrove snakes and pythons) curled up in the mangroves above. We also saw kingfishers, Spider crabs and white lipped monkeys.

We did a 4pm river cruise. Very beautiful and relaxing. Perfect for kids any age as it is safe and slow and stress-free. We saw snakes, bats, monkeys and lizards.
We then did the 6.30pm turtle release about a 20min drive away. We all loved it, but the amount of plastic litter in the area was appalling. The guide warned us of the dangers of plastic waste in the oceans, but the turtle sanctuary couldn't be bothered to clean up the plastic around their own area. There was even a big bin bag of plastic waste spilled and left lying there.
The baby turtles were put in basins for us to see and hold (with gloves) for about 30mins before they were released. I felt a bit uncomfortable with this as everyone, young and old were picking up the turtles for photos and they were handled a lot in that time. Maybe it's not a problem for the turtles and they seemed to have no problem finding their way to the ocean when they were released, but it seemed like uneccessary stress for the turtles.
But all in all it was a lovely activity especially for the kids.

We took the Night Fireflies tour on 14-March-2020. It was a great experience for my whole family. The tourguide, Hafiz, was so knowledgeable and had so much experience. He explained to us in detail the lifespan of fireflies and the dos/donts to the fireflies when we set out. Our parents and children really enjoyed the trip. Thank you!

We took the night tour and was completely mesmerized by Hafiz's magic. You have to go to experience it yourself and it is worth every penny and second. We might try the daytime mangrove tour. The river is very pleasant and lovely nature.

For our exploration of the Cherating River, we booked two tours on the same day with Hafiz’s Cherating Activites via our hotel and paid when we arrived. The first was a 4pm afternoon “Cherating Mangrove River Cruise (Nature & Wildlife Watch)” which was a 1 hr 30 minute boat ride along the mangroves with just us and a guide. We were at high tide and passing under the first bridge required us ducking down very very low. We were told that on the bigger boats they had to sometimes start their tour from there. Our guide explained about mangrove trees as well as pointing out various wildlife such as tree snakes and spiders. The section where he took us through some narrow channels and turned off the motor was very peaceful. The waters are very still and reflect the surrounding trees.

The second tour was the 7:30pm “Hafiz’s Friendly Fireflies Watch” which started with an explanation by Hafiz in an air-conditioned room about fireflies, what to expect and how to act and then we were divided into groups of about 16 people each and boarded about six boats which set off together. The boats maneuvered in the dark and, because of our afternoon visit, we had some idea of where we were. No photographs were allowed because it would affect the fireflies. The boats would stop along the river where the fireflies were congregating, and you would see their lights blinking in the trees. They were often attracted towards the boats so you could see them closer and some would land on people.

My husband preferred the daytime mangrove tour while I preferred the night firefly tour but we found both interesting experiences that, I think, complemented each other. Both boat tours required lifejackets to be worn so there was an emphasis on safety.
