…as the information (including lots of photos and art work) about its construction is pretty interesting. There is also a fair amount of unrelated art and even some free literature relating to the beliefs centred in Kun Lam, which we didn’t take but were of very high quality to be free! As for the statue itself, its imposing size but gentle design gives a mixed impression. However it is no doubt an important part of the seafront and Macau’s history.

The seaside statue of Kun Iam adds color to Macau waterfront. The huge golden Kun Iam stepping on lotus is a popular attraction for tour groups. A visit at night is more interesting.

The Kun Iam Statue and Ecumenical Centre (free entry) is located along Ave. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen in the N.A.P.E. area of Macau. You can see the statue at all hours of the day. The Centre is open from 10am to 6pm daily (closed on Fridays).

What you see here is a 20 metre tall figure of Kun Iam (Goddess of Mercy) situated atop the Ecumenical Centre. This much revered figure is gold in colour, graceful with a loving and caring appearance. The statue is located at the end of a 60 metre causeway in the harbour facing the Macau Peninsula.

You can take good photos of the Kun Iam Statue during the day when the sun is at your back. At night the statue is lit up with floodlights and is nice to see as well.

The Ecumenical Centre can be an interesting place to visit if you have time and interest in local religions and philosophies of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism as well as more specifically about Kun Iam, all of which is broadly covered within the two floors of the Centre.

A gorgeous bronze lady queen standing on a dome-shaped lotus. Her name? Kun Iam, same status as the goddess Guan Yin or Kwan Yin. These deities are honored as the Buddhist Goddess of Love, Mercy and Compassion. She is 20 metres tall (65 feet), weighing 50 tons and located on a small island looking at the river Yangtze (Yellow River). Remember the Portuguese were here, colonized Macau and found here A-MA-GAU, the Temple of AMA. So they named this place MACAU. The Portuguese were involved with the Kun Iam Statue, a design by thePortuguese architect and sculptor Cristina Rocha Leiria, with the support of UNESCO,

We could only see the state from a distance as the complex was closed for works being carried out. The statue is none the less magnificent to view, even if from a distance. I would like to return when works are completed.

I do understand why some might review this towering statue of Kun Iam, goddess of mercy, as being no more than an average attraction, but on our first tour of Macau some years ago it was the first stop, and the towering image is what pops into my mind every time I think of Macau. There is something about the windswept image of this monumental work, and the compassionate expression on the statue's face, that appeals strongly to me and helps me understand why this would be an image of a deity devoted to mercy. I don't usually get drawn into spiritual experiences involving religions other than my own, but I admit to being strongly attracted to this place, and also freely admit that it affected my rating and that opinions may differ sharply.

Kun Iam is the Goddess of Compassion and of the Sea and the Fisherman. This is my favorite place in Macau, a no man's land point between Macau and the islands with a view to the waters of the bay where a slight breeze usually blows. The gold of the statue contracts with the blue of the sky and few pieces of art will convey better the feeling of compassion than the pose and expression of this statue. Of course, this is the western version of Kun Ian, the Eastern version would be a lot more Buddhist-like, but maybe that's what makes it so special. Together with the statue of A-Ma in Coloane, this place is a must visit.

Did the 15 minute walk from the MGM on a blustery, drizzly winter day. Proceeded to find my only geocache on Macau at the beginning of the walkway. Took a few minutes to soak up the atmosphere, and left. I would recommend pleasant diversion

It is relatively recent in terms of additions to the Macau landmarks since it was a parting gift from the Portuguese so in 1999 just before Macau was "given back " to China the Portuguese authorities have erected this statue of Guan Yin. So this is why is interesting:
- it is on the sea shore- as the majority of the Guan Yin statues are facing the sea - this one is not facing the sea but is facing inland - it was built like this as was recommended by a master in Feng Shui (again part of the chinese culture).
- it has a small shop / gift shop underneath you can get some memorabilia.
- when we were there were not too many people around - compared to other landmarks of Macau, but I guess is depending on the day.
- also you can get out to the sea side - so you can enjoy the breeze and the sea.
- visiting is free of charge - so you can just watch from close by.
When in Macau and you have the time check it out.
