Those who know the work of master Cutileiro, recognize this statue as the Marquis of Pombal. Turning to the marina, looking at the neighboring town of Ayamonte, it is in the gardens of Av. da República, on the back to the city that he ordered to rebuild, after the earthquake of 1755, in the style to which he gave his name. Pleasant location, close to the center, which enables a pleasant walk on the edge of the Guadiana.

Located in a beautiful place by the harbour I cannot make up my mind whether I like this piece of art or not? Maybe that is what it is meant to achieve as we were all divided on its merit.

It's modern and contemporary but it wasn't very thought about when the artist was trying to describe Marques.
It's out of context!!!
Disappointing :(

This is an unusual statue, on the riverside, not sure what it depicts, a local told us, it depicts whatever you want. All the same , it is worth a visit.

Hairdo that of wigs worn in the past? More like dreadlocks but what fun. Lovely marble slabs? A statue for modern times and interpret the way you want to.

Nice stroll along the local promenade.
Great rustic looking buildings, and an interesting statue.
Cracking views of the estuary and also of Spain.

Very unusual statue, not too sure what it represented, but very interesting. Lovely to stroll along the promenade.

Marques de Pombal is one of the most important characters in the long and glorious history of Portugal. Tis statue brings him back to our days with a "twist". Some people may not like it, but I think it is fun and has all those grid-like traits the Marques used in Lisbon and here in Vila Real Sto António

We had trouble deciding just what this statue represented, the top looking like a collection of corks from wine bottles. Everyone had a different interpretation which led us to look it up - which in a way makes it a good statue - it got everyone thinking!!!
