You get a sense of what is to come when you realize cars cannot enter the area and you are to be whisked around by golf cart style busses. Then when you approach the bridge you are treated to an "ethnic performance" which just feels awkward and wrong. The bridge and some of the architecture of the buildings nearby are cool but the area has been commercialized into a folk village type of a park. There's no authentic lifestyle feel to the place at all, unlike places like Shaxi or some of the villages near Kaili. Not a bad place to spend a day at but I had much higher expectations and found myself disappointed with the experience.

The bridge is not very long, tatally made by wood, but very strong. Heard of if there was in the holiday, we can see some ethnic performance here.

This is a wonderful piece of wooden Chinese architecture.

Pedestrianised so you don't have to dodge traffic, though you do have to weave through the local souvenir sellers.

We were staying in the village. When we exited the far end of the bridge we then had to run the gauntlet of the local women wanting us to drink and make a contribution to pass by.

It is amazing to think about the ten year process to build this bridge (1912-1924). The hours of precision labor must have been painstaking but 100 years later there it stands, beautiful and strong.
We entered the village from this bridge and did encounter a few mildly aggressive old women who tried to put souvenirs in our hands but that is just part of the experience now.

A beautiful 100 year old Dong bridge that connects to the Ma'Yan Village. A small river runs below it. Small patches of rice terraces, tea plants and derelict water wheels. Feels peaceful. Not many tourists.

You can explore the villages within. Drum towers and more traditional bridges.

Entrance to the whole area is 60 RMB per person.

The bridge itself is beautiful. It is located in the scenic area of the Dong villages.
In spite of mass tourism the villages are still authentic and very worthwile to visit.

The best preserved 100 years old wood bridge in Sanjiang Dong minority village was built in 1912. Here you can see the whole bridge make of wood without any nails. There lots of engineers ,scientists ,tourists come to visit it and look for the answer. I show my friends and tourists there much times. They all surprised by its old Chinese building techniques. The first time I saw it like a beautiful girl, second time it like a elegant lady.......I am happy to go there with my friends and my tourists,I love my tour guide job! If you want a panoramic photo like mine, you can go to nationality hotel!

Since we were in the area (Longsheng), and we wanted to catch the high-speed train from Sanjiang to Yangshuo, we decided to visit Chengyang to see the drum towers, wind and rain bridges, and experience the Dong minority culture. We enjoyed all of the above, but were also disappointed in the lack of preservation of such a unique place. It shows the tension between the desire for development for the people still living in the villages and the desire of tourists to experience the "traditional" Dong culture. This is not a problem specific to this village, or even to China. So don't be dissuaded by one-star reviews, but keep an open mind before you visit.

Many of the buildings were new and made of concrete/brick instead of the traditional 100% wooden houses. this is understandable as these materials are more comfortable to live in, but are an eyesore to tourists. Supposedly, the govt is aware of the problem and is planning to enforce building restrictions and add wooden facades to the existing concrete buildings. How successful that will be is to be determined. Hopefully, the govt will have learned it's lesson from Lijiang and instead of creating a fake old city where no one actually lives, they can create a balanced environment where the Dong villagers can continue to live there while improving the quality of their lives AND improving the experience for tourists. This I think is a hard, but not an impossible task.

On a more practical note, food options are limited, but we found that if you stick to the ubiquitous rice noodles, you can't go wrong. And if you walk around, you'll easily be able to find cheap and comfortable lodging in a traditional wooden hotel.

We took the fast train from Guilin to Sanjiang and from there a car took us to the village of Chengyang, to see the Wind and Rain Bridge. The train ride was pleasant and comfortable and the bridge was picturesque and interesting to see, and so were the small surrounding villages. Actually there are several similar bridges but, once you saw the longest and the biggest, seeing the others a kind of looses importance, the more that the mid-day heat is really strong... All together, it makes for in interesting and recommended half a day trip from Guilin.

You will find a picture of this bridge in every tourist book. Seeing it in person however is quit impressive.
In the morning the town women welcome the visitors to the town with singing and flowers.
