To assist with ship navigation, a temporary lighthouse was positioned on Lady Elliot Island in 1866. It toppled in a severe storm in 1872 and in 1873 a new light station was established. Standing at approximately 17 metres, the white and red lighthouse you see today was pre-made in England and shipped to the Island in pieces. It was the first lighthouse in Australia with a timber frame and weatherproof cast iron external cladding. The lighthouse was decomissioned in 1995 when it became too short for the surrounding vegetation and a new solar powered, fully automated tower was built. Lady Elliot Island lightstation was placed on the Commonwealth Heritage List in 2004. It is also significant because it represents an important landmark indicating the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The Lady Elliot Island Lightstation Heritage Management Plan was developed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) in March 2012 to protect, conserve and manage the Commonwealth Heritage values of the Lady Elliot Island lightstation. At this stage, the lighthouse is not open to the public but is often the focus of history and photography buffs.

This lighthouse is non operational and replaced by the automatic one. Nevertheless, it looks fantastic in the surrounds of the island and holds an interesting history as well. I do not think you can walk up the light house but all visitors can walk past it or around it during their stay at Lady Eliott island.

Be sure to turn your back on the sunset for a moment to see the light on the building. Drinks at sunset are a treat.

Flying in and out from Brisbane, great meals and a comfortable room were a bonus to what the reef guardian staff do to care for this Australian jewel. The best, undisturbed shore-access snorkelling and diving with an eco resort on the GBR. Safe, comfortable and easy access to see so many sea creatures and coral colours. Loved visiting in mid... Its sufficient to navigate to around sunset to watch the fab sunset. Its only interest is for history buffs people mostly come here for the sea life; I didn't see a single person admiring this, they were all swimming/schnorkelling/diving.

At apron 5.30 pm Matt the Bartending was waiting with esky and Cold Drinks. Sit in front of the Lighthouse sipping on a Cold Beer watching the Sunset. I enjoyed this moment with the new friends I met on the Island. A truly special place

Worth a look, although closed access to the top. The old light house is well maintained and offer start contrast to the new lighthouse. They don't make them like they used to.
