I think your parents will be fine. You need to step into the buckets but they are not too high off the ground, approximately 30cm. When you hop on and off there are operators to open and close the door on the bucket. They can slow down the buckets or stop them completely and this may be useful for your parents. The operators have always been really helpful for me when I've travelled up with small children.
