The Ourém castle was renovated and restored. Parts of the castle are now accessible and other areas were made safer with guide rails and a cat walk. A guided tour of the castle is also available. Highly recommend this side trip from nearby Fatima.

From a distance and even close up it looks rather new to be a medieval building, Actually new or an overdone restoration I’m not sure as it was impossible to get too close. The roads to the structure are blocked with barriers. The graveyard next door on top of the hill seemed in use but no access to enter the structure.

I’m giving this a 1-star only to let people know that the castle is currently closed for renovation works. We visited last week after consulting their opening hours and nowhere was it mentioned that the castle was closed! No idea of how long the works will take so it’s best to call the municipal council for more information before planning a visit.

We visited the castle of Ourém on the same day that we have visited the castle of Torres Novas. The Ourém castle who is located in the Medieval town of Ourém, on the top of the hill is one of the most innovative works of military architecture of the century. XV in Portugal. Built by Conde de Ourém, grandson of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, the castle has a compact structure with modern active defense systems, including two large pentagonal towers that act as bastions and offered greater resistance to bombing.
But onfortunatly is was also not open for public due to renovation works, nothing of that was mentioned on the website and also the Tourist information bureau was closed due to the Covid pandemic.

The castle is closed, but I would definitely still visit Ourem. It is a quiet, charming medieval town with spectacular views. I saw probably 20 total people - and walked the entire town.

You can still see some of the exterior of the castle (currently being restored) if you walk to it using Rua de Sao Jose. If you try to see it the other way your GPS may take you, the path up to it is completely blocked & you can't see the castle from this way (at least that's how it was in July, 2020).

The area around the castle was forbidden due to a long term maintenance program. However the old streets are nice to wander about and you can visit the Crypt of the nearby church holding the Tomb of the Conde de Ourém.

Ourem is a 12th century castle with a palace added in the 15th century.
The view is fantastic with the town at the foot of the hill.
The castle is undergoing a 2 year restoration project at the moment, but definitely worth a visit.

while it wasn't possible to go inside the castle as they were still working on it,it was still a pleasure to walk around it and take in all those fine views then walk around the village with all it's side streets that were super quiet when i went making it feel like i had it all to myself.
