Early 1600s council houses like the one in Schoorl emerged in many smaller places in Holland. Very simple in design and just one room, sometimes a prison is attached. The council members were usually villagers who dealt with local issues on a part-time basis. They served the community. Taxes were kept to a minimum. Sharp contrast to what the situation is nowadays.

Just looking at it gives you a feel of importance, it's diminutive size not withstanding. It once was the town hall and built for the city council in 1601 and served as such for the next 300 years (1901 to be exact). It consists of one single room. After 1932 the building was moved a few yards to accommodate widening of the road.

IN front of the building stands a bronze statue of Jan van Scorel, a 16th century painter and illustrator.

Schoorl(gemeente Bergen) was once an small independent town hence the small town hall (Raadhuisje van Schoorl) dating from the year 1601.This former town hall stands next to the protestant church of Schoorl dating from 1783.In front of both buildings there is a modern statue of the painter Jan van Scorel who was born in Schoorl in the year 1495.His paintings can be seen at Frans Hals Museum and Boymans van Beuningen Museum.
