- Ruth HCounty Mayo, Ireland1 contributionMagical experience!!!All of it was just incredible!!5 stars is not enough ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ !My room was amazing, with such beautiful views of the lake and the fountain and immaculate gardens. The staff were incredible, so kind and generous nothing was too big an ask or too small an ask, and also they were great fun! The food was absolutely delicious, I had the pleasure of enjoying afternoon tea with my aunt and it was just superb! White chocolate mousse was divine!!! Yum!!I had in room dining in the evening and I had the wild mushroom risotto, absolutely delicious! Again Yum!! And an ice cream sundae cause why not! Whole experience was just wonderful, so special! And for Coco the cooked chicken pieces for the V.I.P. herself, her little tail was wagging for ages after and boy did she sleep soundly with a happy tummy!!😊😊Visited February 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 February 2023
- Janice MeissnerWeston, Florida102 contributionsFairytale Experience!!Truly a fairytale and magical experience. From the moment you arrive you are treated like royalty and so many people are wanting to help and make your stay there fabulous. Our only regret was we should have stayed 2 nights or longer! We did have time in the 1 day/night to take some lovely walks on the grounds and to the local village, had afternoon tea in the Connaught Room (highly recommend!) and a delicious breakfast in the main dining room. The rooms are wonderful and very comfortable! Highly recommend splurging for this castle experience!Visited March 2023Written 20 March 2023

My friend and I just completed our third trip to Ireland and the fist stay at Ashford. It is everything we thought it would be and more. Its history is incredible, the atmosphere is exquisite, the dining venues are varied, with amazing and delicious food. Had the Salmon in the Dungeon, and it was off the chart, good! The grounds are beautiful with many photographic moments to take home with you! You can ride horses, golf, take a lake cruise, or do a Hawk Walk, all available from the Castle grounds. We did the Hawk Walk. The hotel staff are kind, accommodating, and first rate, both professional and personally! I cannot say enough about Ashford Castle! If you want to stay in a real castle, this is the one! Slainte ☘️ Ashford Castle, and thank you for making us feel like Royalty!!!Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 June 2023

The suite, restaurants, pubs, spa services, reception, staff, grounds, extra curricular activities were all superb in every way. I highly recommend this as the number one hotel in Ireland. - Byron RLaguna Beach, California701 contributionsA wonderful return to Ashford CastleWhen I last reviewed Ashford Castle I titled it "if only once in your life time one should visit . How lucky am I to have returned!...and it was as I remembered it....Regal and stunningly beautiful. Our room was lovely with a fireplace and stunning view of the lake. All of the rooms differ in décor . When last here we enjoyed the falconry, horseback riding, skeet shooting so on this occasion it was a more sedate visit. We strolled the grounds and of course with the Castle Hounds, visited the health spa which has recently been remodeled where we enjoyed the stunning relaxation pool ( It was spectacular and must be visited) along with a wonderful massage and then time in a relaxation room overlooking the river and the trees as their leaves turned golden. We enjoyed morning breakfast in the George V dining room, it was not to be missed. (don't pass up the French toast. yummy) we also enjoyed an evening meal in George V as well and be alert that there is a dress code for dinner. For a more casual dinning experience we enjoyed the Dungeon and Cullen's at the Cottage. I would suggest that you plan reservations for dinning. What makes Ashford most special, THE PEOPLE. To a person everyone is helpful, engaging, friendly and often anticipated our needs. While this was a return, I am hopeful to have others!!Visited November 2023Travelled on businessWritten 13 November 2023

Staff was amazingly efficient, professional, and friendly - from the bridge guard to the wine sommelier - everyone was welcoming. From the moment we arrived we knew we were in great hands.
The castle and its grounds were beautiful and manicured. We were celebrating our 35th anniversary, and staff had arranged a special dessert, with artfully created “Happy Anniversary” on the plate. Our room was luxurious. The linens were so wonderful I wanted to stay in bed! There were many special touches, such as towel & floor warmers and beautiful orchids on the table. There were several cozy fireplaces in the castle, and a lovely bar.
We had the absolute best meal we’ve had anywhere, in Ashford Castle in the King George (?) room. Also the best buffet breakfast we’ve ever had.
We enjoyed walking the grounds, and riding bikes.
I had the falconry experience last year when I was passing thru for the day. It was a thrill, and a highlight of the trip. I wholeheartedly recommend .
Also had a fine massage in the spa, which was first rate, while my husband was playing golf.
I can’t speak highly enough of Ashford Castle, and the experience we had there. I couldn’t think of anything critical in my review, except to suggest that they add e-bikes, which I think are much more fun than the old-fashioned kind.
It really was a pretty perfect experience!

Maybe I missed it but I feel the marketing was very opaque regarding access to the castle. STAYING AT THE LODGE DOES NOT GIVE YOU ACCESS TO THE CASTLE. you only then can access the castle by booking a reservation for an 80 euro per person tour or a meal at one of their restaurants, but they don’t tell you on their website which restaurants are in the castle. If you have a booking for a restaurant, They will let you walk around and explore the castle and go to the bars. You can’t just go in to get a drink at the bar.
Restaurants:
Cullens is in a thatched house next to but not in the castle.
Wildes is at the lodge, not in the castle.
Stanley’s is in the basement of the castle but does not take reservations.
George V is a traditional fancy restaurant in a ballroom type setting.
The drawing room is the main room attached to the Prince of wales bar and has a nice view of the back grounds and lake. Lunch only.
The connaght room is for afternoon tea, also a beautiful setting.
The dungeon is in the basement of the castle. This is where we ate and the food and service was very good. Very nice ambiance.
Bars:
The billiards room. Has a large snooker table and they will teach you how to play! Has a real fire and smells like it, but in a cozy castle kind of way. Menu is the same as the bar downstairs. Small outdoor patio. Has cigars as well.
Prince of wales bar. Nice classy bar on the main floor. Same menu as upstairs.
The lodge:
Beautiful rooms, heated floors, small fridges. Small back patio for the suites. Great breakfast that is two courses and Ala carte. Great service. They will shuttle you around the grounds at any time.
Estate:
Beautiful grounds. Walking distance from the town of cong.
All the excursions and activities cost money except free first come cruiser bike rental.

Walk with Hawks experience was an incredible experience and one we definitely recommend.
Our Falconer, Tommy put us at ease with the Avery and chatted about the birds, their personalities, their history, but he was so passionate about their welfare, it truly made us feel at ease to do the walk.
We were shown how to wear the glove, the hand movement the birds recognise (I don’t want to give too much away) and he would be with us every step of the way.
Our birds were short winged Harris Hawks ….Millie and Ethan (forgive me, I’m unable to recall his full Irish name but it sounded like Ethan.)
He liked hunting ducks for Tommy to retrieve!!
Millie was very cheeky at swooping between hubby and myself as we walked…..the sound as she swooped so close together with the rush of wind is something we shall never forget.
Ethan was a little lazy and loved a release off my arm.
The whole experience exceeded our expectations of simply watching birds of prey fly….we were introduced to a snippet of their world ….all thanks to Tommy our Falconer and the amazing team he works with.
Thank you

Sorry for my delay in replying - it's 15 euros to get into the grounds and there's a restaurant, a small shop and cafe there but you cannot enter the castle. Another way of doing it if you want to go in is to book afternoon tea but that's about 50 or 55.

You can either go and have tea there, and while there walk around or pay 10 Euros and stroll around, I don't think they have guides there.
If I am coming to dine at the castle, is there an entrance or parking fee?

I really don't know, but if you are having tea and doing falconry I am sure you will be allowed to walk around the grounds and have access to most of the castle. The staff there is most friendly. We loved the people at the school. You will have a fabulous time! I wish we were there right now....really fell in love with everything and everyone there!

Hi
I don’t know the opening times but entry to the grounds by car is only permitted if you have a reservation at the lodge or hotel. You can walk through the grounds at any time during opening hours.

I was interested in seeing the original cottage that was used in the 'Quiet Man' movie, but I'm not staying at the hotel.
Can I pay to get into the Castle to see this just as a one day visitor?
Thanks

we paid 10 euro to enter the grounds. you can only go to the restricted areas if you are not a registered guest. there is a cottage from the quiet man movie but it is the "squires house". it is located behind the falconry. about a 5 minute walk. we had a rare wonderful opportunity of speaking with the owner/keeper of the house who actually lives there. she was in the movie as an extra as a little girl as well as most of the town of cong. as i said in my original review the grounds are beautiful but if you are not in the area i would not go out of my way to visit. ps upon exiting the grounds you automatically end up in the town which is small but quite charming.
