About
The Marconi Museum, dedicated to the origin and the development of wireless communications, is housed in Villa Griffone, once the residence of Guglielmo Marconi. Thanks to the integration of historical equipment, hypertexts, film clips and interactive devices, visitors are offered the possibility of retracing the events that marked Guglielmo Marconi’s training and life. Special focus is given to the period spanning from 1895 (first experiments of wireless telegraphy) to 1901 (transmission of the first radio signals across the Atlantic Ocean). The museum houses a series of accurate working replicas of 19th century scientific equipment displayed in various “exhibition islands” dedicated to some of the fundamental stages in the history of electricity, from the precursors of the history of the radio to naval applications of Marconi’s invention. In the area devoted to broadcasting, several instruments developed for the transmission of speech and music in the 20th century are shown. The exhibition also features some interesting documents concerning Guglielmo Marconi’s education (displayed in the famous "silkworm room"), as well as his career as a businessman in the company he established in 1897 and which still bears his name. Among the many activities promoted by the museum, there is a scientific program addressed to schools that includes a workshop which offers educational experiments concerning the history of electricity, electromagnetism and telecommunications. Villa Griffone, the place of origin of radio communications, awaits its visitors with the appeal of the legend as well as modern exhibition displays. The Marconi Museum is open from Monday to Friday with reservation and every Sunday at 10 am. Closed on Saturday

As a ham radio operator, this was like a pilgrimage. So much of what we all take from granted regarding wireless communications began here, and not long ago!
Barbara Valotti was very gracious in accommodating my group of about 20 visitors and the technical demonstration really brought home the importance of what Marconi accomplished and showed the progression of his work.
The collection of vintage Marconi equipment and the preservation of Marconi's attic laboratory were wonderful.

The University and Foundation have done an incredible job creating this museum. After extensive damage during the war this museum was repaired and now is an amazing collection of Marconi's equipment and recreation of his laboratory. Very educational displays and working radios. The first spark gap transmitter works and is on display for all to see! The grounds are beautifully kept and the property is very picturesque.
Anybody who has interest in radio (especially amateurs) need to come here, it is the birthplace of radio! Volunteers will give you a tour by appointment only and they do a marvelous job. Admission price is extremely inexpensive so buy things at the gift shop later to support the museum. Many fascinating books and memorabilia. I purchased a beautiful illustrated book all about the radios he invented. I also purchased a beautiful reproduction of his Nobel acceptance speech in 1909.
This is a fantastic slice of history that you cannot afford to pass up! After you are done here enjoy the rest of the day in Bologna, just a short drive away!

Because this museum is not open at all times it was necessary to schedule a tour in advance. Not only were my husband and I an hour late for our appointment, but we had also mistakenly told the curator that we were going to arrive a day earlier. So, when we arrived 25 hours late we were greeted by a very busy curator. Nevertheless, Barbara took time from her day to take us on a complete tour of Marconi's home and workshop. She was very knowledgeable and gracious about answering our questions and shared much interesting and valuable information. We would recommend this site to people interested in more than the typical tourist sites in Italy. The ride out to the museum provides wonderful vistas.

A guided tour of great interest that allows the visitors to follow the link between a scientific event and a human one, two equally surprising events. At the end of the XIX century, the scientists were investigating the nature and the physical properties of the electromagnetic waves, called Hertzian waves at that time. To this purpose, they attempted to generate Hertzian waves and to transmit them over a few dozen of centimetres. Making use of the same instruments, a young man alone resolved to face a more practical problem: to transmit the Hertzian waves as far as possible. Professor Righi from Bologna, repeatedly nominated for the Nobel Prize, uselessly offered the young man to study physics under his guidance. A few years later, he was astonished when he had to acknowledge that the same young man had been rewarded with the Nobel Prize. The equipments available to the scientists of that time were complemented by Guglielmo Marconi - with an additional component that, from then on, would have been universally called antenna. To patent his broadcasting system, the young man moved to London at the age of 22.
While the personal history of the inventor is told, the guide illustrates the instruments built and used by Marconi right in that villa and in that garden. Simple experiments are performed showing the origins of what today is usually called wireless. Marconi visited an incredible number of countries all over the world and even though at the peak of his fame, he kept looking forward with prophetic lucidity. In 1937, a few months before dying, in his last interview, he claimed that radio broadcasting was not a definitive answer to people needs because that transmission system provided that just one subject was capable of transmitting whereas everybody else was enabled to receive only. On the contrary, in his opinion, the real goal would have been achieved through a one-to-one, both ways, long distance transmission system. This is something that, nowadays, we all take for granted, but 80 years before, was beyond imagination. Really fascinating the exhibition and very communicative the two guides with their own specific expertise.

Our tour was led by Barbara and Gerta who provided incredible insight into Marconi, a great inventor, scientist, and business man. The tour lasted over 90 minutes and our guides clearly explained in English his methods and incredible insights into how radio waves worked. Certainly the best and most valuable tour we have had on our trip. Fee was 5Euro per person and was well worth it.

An experience which, if it hadn't been for the organizer's unmotivated hysteria, would also have been positive.
We booked a visit online as indicated on the site and from an initial response it seemed there was still availability but not having received the second email confirming the booking we went there without many expectations. On site we found our name on the list, among us there were two people with disabilities and the lady was immediately annoyed by the fact that 2 people were entitled to free tickets and that for this reason we should have notified her 48 hours in advance ...we still offered to pay the disabled people's fee as well so as not to put anyone in difficulty and from there a controversy started that we were no longer able to calm down. It should be underlined that the lady did everything by herself, asking and answering, and all while screaming and ranting hysterically, without ever taking a breath; we were shocked, something like this had never happened. Obviously after being treated with kid gloves, we preferred to leave. I am of the opinion that such an elegant and refined place does not deserve to be represented by such an unpleasant and rude person...certainly not suitable for interacting with the public. Apologizing would be a duty.
