We did a trek to the Manshuk Mametova lake with Trekking Club Kazakhstan. A guide picked us up at our hotel, and we took a 30-40 minute drive south of the city into the mountains. We started our trek at the Tuyuk-su resort, which considerably reduced our trekking time. Most trekkers seemed to have started from the Shymbulak Ski Resort which is a further 2.5 km down the mountain. No permits are needed, so you could get transport to the Ski Resort and start there if doing it on your own.

The first landmark that we saw was the Alpiners Memorial, which is on the left just past Tuyuk-su. There were quite a few memorials in this area. and we also passed some more while trekking. The trek to the meteorological station and dam of Mynzhylki Mynzhilk took over an hour on a rocky road. The dam is at 3,100 meters, and a sign marking this height is on the right of the road just before reaching the dam.
The Malaya Almatinka river.is to the right of the road. There was much preventative work being carried out in this area, as is usual in summer. After the mudslide in 1973, which almost reached the town, these safety measures have been put in place. A small wooden gazebo next to the dam provides a rest area.

The rocky road ends at the dam, and if you walk to the left, you will see a clearly defined trail that leads up into the mountains above the dam. This is the difficult area of the trek, and will take 45 minutes. We saw Yaks on the slopes of the mountain while we were climbing this section. At the top of this trail you will see quite a few stones packed in small piles. This is a camping area, the Alpingrad at 3450m. Climbers use this as a base camp to tackle the surrounding peaks. There are beautiful views here of the surrounding mountains and glaciers.

The lake is a further 20 minutes trek, over slippery stones and care should be taken here. You will be astounded by the contrast of the lake and it's surroundings. The lake is a blue green colour, surrounded by many brown rocks, and is against a white back drop of the glacier. It is said to be 30 meters deep. The lake is at 3,450 meters, and the Manshouk Mametova peak at over 4,100 meters, rises above the lake. We took many photos here and rested for half an hour for the return trip down.

The descent to the Touyuk-Su gate was done on a different path which was longer but safer, as we avoided the slippery stones on the steep section of the climb after the dam. We spent approximately 5 hours on the mountain, and it should not be very difficult if you are reasonably fit. The views of the mountains, and the lake are spectacular, and well worth the effort. Our guide then carried us back to the city.
