The construction of the castle began in 1577 under the Venetians and it was completed together with the town wall in 1588. The Winged Lion of Saint Mark shows up in a number of stone carvings, attesting to the Venetian presence.

Located about 10 minutes from cruise Terminal, the new fortress is several 100 years old. Obvious old stone and repairs.

Walked all the way to this fortress and it was closed! It is beautiful on the outside and located across the port which is nice but not worth a visit. Best to go to the Old Fortress.

The council has decided not to allow visitors due to shortage of supervisory staff. There is a shortcut through a tunnel under the fort that gives some idea of what you're missing.

Been before. We came again on a coach trip from our hotel. Made our way here straight away as we’d enjoyed it so much last time. Couldn’t believe it was closed. Apparently they can’t get the security staff. What a crime. We went and visited...More

The Fortress looked quite enticing, and I walked all the way up to the entrance only to find a notice saying it was closed to visitors until further notice. If only they had the sense to put the sign at the bottom of the steps!

The new fortress looks amazing on the outside. Unfortunately you can't go inside because of shortage of staff. It seems a shame not such a great building is closed because of staff issues.

We walked up to the New Fortress to find it closed (I've attached a photo of the notice that's on the gate. This was not a problem for us as we love just strolling around the old town.

Yes, we followed the route from the large fountain on the seafront by the old port. It's actually very easy. The only awkward bit is that you don't pay till you get to the top so you feel like you shouldn't be there at... More
