We went to visit the cathedral as a family of four...
I was totally shocked when I was turned away from entering with the reason for wearing shorts... even though my shorts were longish.
Someone else was allowed entry who was wearing similar length of shorts.
Maybe I was discriminated against as I was a tourist.
The lady (bouncer) on the door was very unpleasant.
Enter at your peril....

To think that with perhaps less that 5% of Thais being Catholics, in Buddhist-dominant Thailand, this Church is certainly unique and special in Chanthaburi.
Catholics and non-believers, gather at this Church during Christmas.

If you can, attend one of the mass. There should be one in the early morning and another later in the evening.

While the masses are in Thai, Catholic churches have similar mass schedules so you will be able to understand. Just refer to the missal which can be found online.

After a couple of hours at Phlieu waterfall, we found ourselves at this quite impressive cathedral.
It offers a guide book that explains all th statues.
A pleasant hour, specially for those that like taking pictures.

Wet beautiful cathedral. Unfortunately closed when we visited, be it’s still enough to just enjoy the old architecture. Quiet area and easy to get to too. I recommend the Wall Street Art walk next to it.

The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception of Chanthaburi is definitely the must visit if you are in this city.

The church carries similar design with the Notre Dame in Paris but with black and white finishing. It stands out from its neighborhood and looks amazing well from across the river too.

The working cathedral has a beautiful interior too, together witha beautiful glittering statue of Mother Mary.

The church is open for visitors at specific hours in the morning and afternoon and there is even a caretaker that will help you answer any questions on the church but in Thai.

There have been Roman Catholic churches near this site on the banks of the river since 1711, the current (fourth) Cathedral was built in 1906-09 in a gothic style. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is the largest Christian church in Thailand. It was built in Chanthaburi during the nearly 10 years of French occupation of Chanthabun (now Chanthaburi) from 1893 to 1904. It was completed in 1909 after Chanthaburi to have been returned to Siam (1904) by the French III republic.
Inside is beautiful; a highlight is the statue of the Virgin Mary - the statue of the Virgin Mary is nearly completely covered with gold, gemstones and emeralds... The blue of her cloak is composed of several thousand blue sapphires originating from local mines, plus hundreds of white sapphires from Sri Lanka, rubies from Thailand, gold, and green emeralds.

I’ve been checking on places to visit here in Chanthaburi and the Mary Immaculate Conception Cathedral came out on top of the list.

It took for about 3 hours drive from Pattaya to reach the Cathedral. Parking is not a problem at all as they have a huge space inside the compound.

The cathedral is beautiful, inspired the by the European architecture and designs. It’s pretty huge compared so some Catholic Churches here in Thailand. Impressive too, in a sense that it’s located in the very city of Chanthaburi neighboring other religions.

When you go in and you want to reflect and want to feel the atmosphere, sit at the back, it’s more ideal than sitting close to the altar, this is to minimize or you will not be disturb with the noise and the people doing their selfie mania.

When you’re done, try to follow the little bridge behind the cathedral. It will take you to its old city and it’s beautiful!

I went to chantaburi to visit friends and we were drawn to the church by the sound of the bells. Once I saw the steeples I knew it was a Catholic church. It was wonderful to see, I walked around the church and took photos but didn't go inside until the following day. There were young students in school uniforms all around the area of the church square. The church seemed to be the center of the community. Very nicely lit at night.

This is the largest church in the whole of Thailand and is the seat for the Bishop of Chanthaburi. Beautifully designed and maintained, this huge church has many elements of old European design combined with Thai elements like wood.
Go on a Sunday morning to be amazed with the acoustics in the hall during service.
