Had guest from the capital of the country. Since there is nothing significant to be shown took them to a resort in M P and then showed them the centre of India ( authenticity cant be ascertained ). Was shocked to see such a iconic momument in total neglect with garbage littered, poorly maintained garden. It pains be to say the momunent was in total shambles. Sad the city fathers ( NMC ) is such a thick skin n irresponsible that they cant even propect the history , forget about asking them to creat one

In my view, this should be major tourist attraction, as it is believed to be the center point of India. But it is not developed as such I had also missed once while crossing it. Anyhow managed to come there but it is on one side of a major busy road, so no chance of stopping the vehicle and admire the structure. May the administration take notice of it.

When you are proceeding from Sitabardi to Reserve Bank Square on NH 7 ,(Kanyakumari to Varanasi.) you will pass a location which was part of Indian history and also of history of science of cartography . It is a place proudly referred to by Nagpurians & Nagpur lovers as Zero Mile. However There is nothing to indicate the location of this historic land mark , no sign boards etc. Unless you are careful and watchful in all that you observe , in all probability you will miss this unique landmark. On the other hand a watchful traveler at a T-junction before Reserve Bank Square on the left side will notice statue of four horses in red sand stone and sand stone Pillar about 20 feet in height. . A keener observer will also notice a kilometer stone [ Mile stone of the yore :-) ] indicating Varanasi -729 and Jabalpur - 273 the other side indicating Kanyakumari - 1600 and Hyderabad - 485. Nagpur distance is not given on either side . 0 (ZERO) painted on broad side of the stone indicates that Nagpur is 0 mile at this place .This mile stone "Zero mile stone " and the Pillar near the horses is the important and famous "Zero mile Pillar."
Every geographic area has a center ergo every country has to have a geographic center. To the best of my knowledge, I know not of any city in the world claiming to be the geographic center of the country. Nagpurians and Nagpur lovers have bestowed this distinction on Nagpur city and the very same Zero mile marker is proclaimed AND accepted as Geographical Center of India.Being geographic center has its own advantages . All major highways NH-7 ( Varanasi - Kanyakumari ) & NH-6 (Mumbai - Sambalpur - Calcutta) and major railways trunk route (Mumbai, Chennai, Howrah , Delhi) pass through the city . Air connectivity has now also been established . Nagpurians can proudly claim to be well connected by road , rail and air with all four corners of the country.
Why is this place called "Zero Mile "?
Research on the net and googling, revealed that general belief and consensus is that this spot is called zero mile BECAUSE it is the geographic center of the country . But that understanding is WRONG . Being geographic center and zero mile has no relation . The real reason why it is called Zero Mile is the GTS Standard Benchmark Pillar, generally hidden from casual visitors and cursory glance as it is at a lower level of surrounding ground by about 3-5 feet , behind the horses. But I am getting ahead of my self . When I saw it , I had no idea what the GTS Pillar meant .Back to research and net .A G.T.S. (Great Trigonometrical Survey) benchmark is a permanently fixed reference survey station (or point), having known elevation with respect to a standard datum (mean sea level). This GTS, at zero mile, was one of the many such established with great accuracy in what can be termed as One of the most stupendous tasks in the history of science of cartography, started 200 years ago by William Lambton and completed four decades later by George Everest, Nagpur was capital of central Provinces those days . With A GTS bench Mark in Nagpur , taking this GTS Pillar as Chart Datum mapping and surveys were carried out to cover complete Central Provinces and areas beyound .This place being Chart Datum all the measurements were taken starting with this place as Zero .. And that is why this place , which has a Great Trigonometrical Survey Bench Mark , from where all the measurements started, became ZERO MILE . Distances to some major cities were then inscribed at the base of the pillar which is came to be known as "Zero Mile Pillar" .
The place is such that those interested will rate it as excellent . Those not interested will rate it as poor.I have rated is as excellent.
In fact doing the Research in finding out meaning of GTS and other things was facinating , interesting , absorbing and I learnt so much that I wrote things in detail in my blog at http://velusr.blogspot.in/. Those interested may visit that link.

This Zero Mile, believed to be the centre of India, is porrly maintained. Could have gained a name in the 'heritage' sightings, if Nagpur Municipal Corp. would have maintained in good condition

I was appalled to see a place of significance to be nothing but a faux . I had traveled nearly 30 miles from the outskirts of city with such a fanfare that I'll see some army men and archaic cannons and battle tanks.
When I reached there, I was puzzled thinking I had been fooled by the autowallas. But to my utter shock, I indeed was at the zero mile marker which was nothing but a marker on the main road, near the Nagpur Central Railway Station .
The government should take some actions to recognize the significance of the place and promote tourism activity at this location.

I am presently staying alone at Nagpur and trying to take forward the places of importance in the city . I read about the same in social science sometimes 3 decades back & that there is a stone pillar which is envisaged to be the centre of INDIA "Zero Mile stone of India" & is located from where the distance of all the cities of India is calculated. If you have come for the first time, you might as well may take note of it on the left flank of the road as you complete Wardha Road while coming from Airport towards RBI chowk just after crossing SitaBuldi.
Opposite to it there is Sitabuldi Fort which gets opened for public only on 15th Aug and 26th Jan. Watch for my experience on a visit to SitaBuldi Fort in coming winter. Till then keep visitng my page as I am going to share some thrilling jungle saffari experience in come winter [ Pench / tadoba/ Nagzira/ Bandhabgarh]..

I had a few hours at my disposal. I was coming from a tour at Tadoba Tiger Reserve via Chandrapur. The train was to start from Nagpur at 4.15 am for Howrah. So I booked a room in Retiring Room at Nagpur Railway Station. It was very hot in the evening. I hired an auto for Zero Mile, a tourist spot of historic interest in Nagpur, the orange city & the second largest city of the state. It is situated near the Reserve Bank Square.
It was constructed during the time of the British Rule; it holds a great historical significance. The British used it as a starting point to measure the distance of many states and towns from Nagpur which is at the geographical heart of India. A zero mile marker is located here. A sandstone pillar and statues of four horses mark the spot. The height of the top of this pillar is 1020.171 feet above ASL.
The English rulers considered Nagpur as the centre of India. Being at the centers of the country, they also had a plan to make Nagpur the second capital city. The British marked Nagpur as ‘zero’ and computed the distance of other prominent cities from Nagpur. The Zero Mile Stone is not, however, the exact geographic centre of the country. Post the partition of India, the location of the centre of the country shifted slightly northeastwards into what is now Madhya Pradesh. The actual location is a place called Karaundi near Sihora in Madhya Pradesh. It is deep inside a remote forest.
