About
The stone castle started to appear on the place of the former Estonian stronghold in 1224. The fortress got its final shape and size in the beginning of the 16th century and was one of the distinguished fortresses in Estonia and Latvia. Due to wars between Sweden, Poland and Russia all that is left from the entire order castle today are just a few stone walls.Already in the beginning of the last century the ruins of the fortress and the park around it turned into a recreational area for the residents of Viljandi. In order to access the castle hills from town a rope bridge was build from the Kaeuvumagi hill over the 13 meters deep trench in 1931. From the ruins you have the most beautiful view over the lake of Viljandi.

The castle park is a lovely place for a walk with several trails. The castle ruins are just ruins, not much is left from the Teutonic castle. But from the top of the park, you have a sweeping view of the lake and the valley below. Behind the castle is also a beautiful suspension bridge.

The castle ruins are quite impressive and interesting to walk through. Try to imagine what once was there.

To me there is nowhere else in Estonia that is is effortlessly picturesque as the scene that opens up from the castle ruins on the hill overlooking Lake Viljandi and the land below. That alone makes visiting the ruins a must, but the history of the place itself is also fascinating, and imagining what it must have been like all those hundreds of years ago is part of the joy of visiting.

Ruins from the year 1200 is not something that you can see everywhere or everyday. It would be great if the council/government can do something to protect these ruins and save them from disaster.

The ruins are interesting in themselves for history buffs but it's a very nice walk for everyone, offering goregeous views of the lake and the surrounding countryside. Plus a park and the famous suspension bridge.

Rather well preserved ruins of a great castle, in a grand place with beautiful view. You can both admire the view and learn the history of the castle and whole region. Just make sure you go there when the weather is nice.

It is really interesting place right in the heart of Viljandi, there's no much left of the Castle but still worth seeing it, quite a view !

There is little to see in Viljandi as it is mainly a drive through point between Parnu and Tartu. However a short stop at the Viljandi Castle Ruins and nearby church is worth a visit. Teutonic castle of which little remains but the ongoing restoration programme offers great promise and the views are excellent. However it is very exposed and there is little or no shelter if it is raining (as it often does in Livonia). Best of all it is free and there is a new visitor centre with facilities and a small shop.
