Local Ocean Trust is a private, not for profit organisation committed to the protection of Kenya's marine environment. We love our local ocean and we use practical conservation, community involvement and development, education, research and campaigning to promote the sustainable use of Kenya's marine resources. Watamu Turtle Watch is our flagship programme. It was started by local residents in 1997 to protect nesting sea turtles. Now it consists of our Nest Monitoring and Protection programme, By Catch Net Release Programme, and specialist Rehabilitation Centre for sick and injured sea turtles. The combination of these programmes enables us to make a real difference in ensuring the future of endangered sea turtles.

My friend and I Jeannette had the best time visiting the Watamu Turtle Watch. We were ble to meet Big Mama and Big Papa as well as a small hawksbill who has been found with fishing line stuck around his neck. I have visited many conservation rescues around the world and Watamu Turtle Watch is right up there with the... More

Fantastic place! We went to have a look around Turtle Watch one afternoon; we arrived unannounced and Dennis was more than happy to show us around. He walked us through brilliantly presented boards offering information that was educational without preaching and informative of the immense work undertaken by Turtle Watch. Their work doesn't stop at simply helping sick turtles, they... More

We had a guided visit to their turtle rehab center and were impressed with the work they are doing to help marine turtles and other animals and to educate the community and visitors on the importance of taking care of them and our oceans.

It was low season and there was no one in Watamu, but that doesn't mean there weren't turtles to be rescued or released back into the wild. The tour is very nice and although I've seen several turtle protection/ conservation societies I've never seen a center like this. We saw 3 turtles released and tourists were allowed to hold and... These people really care and that shows in all they do. Our guide was very knowledgeable, articulate and passionate about all things turtle and the local ecosystem. I learnt so much whilst I was there - very highly recommended.

The visit is quite interesting, with a knowledgeable guide. There a lot of signs explaining why turtles are endangered and giving information about turtles in general. Very informative details about conservation and what Turtle Watch actually does (care, release, awareness-raising...) A frequent comment on this page is about the few turtles you actually get to see when visiting the refuge.... More

It was quite informative & didn't know turtles are that endangered and that they can swim very far to lay eggs. Good reception and a very friendly guide.
