About
The greatest of Jamaican great houses, the Rose Hall Great House has a story with all the elements of an engaging novel. Built in 1770 by John Palmer and his wife, it eventually became the residence of their grandnephew, John Rose Palmer. In 1820, Palmer married Annee, a beautiful but feisty English girl. Little did John know that his young wife possessed “black magic” powers that would eventually lead to his demise. During her reign as mistress of the plantation, Annee did away with two more husbands and countless lovers. “The White Witch of Rose Hall” has fascinated generations, and even today, there are those who claim to see Annee passing through the Great House. A candle-lit evening tour of the Rose Hall Great House is a must for visitors to Montego Bay. Your guided exploration of the former home of Jamaica’s White Witch, Annee Palmer, includes captivating and chilling stories of love, murder and mystery skillfully told by knowledgeable guides. You’re sure to feel goose bumps as these eerie tales come to life in this grand estate, where ghost sightings have been reported over the years. Tours also give historic insight into this grandest of Jamaican great houses, now beautifully restored with 18th-century decor and antiques. To conclude this fascinating adventure, you can visit the dungeon, now transformed into a tavern called Annee’s Pub. Many visitors find that the famous rum cocktail, known as “Witches Brew” helps banish the spirits of ghosts or black magic they sense still lingering in the mansion.

- David DDixon, Missouri272 contributionsA Great Trip for some HistoryEvery vacation my wife tells me I need to learn something, so this was one of the "somethings" for this trip. The tour is really nice, some great history, great antiques, and a great story of Annie. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. The house itself is an amazing structure but it's the history that is the real star in my opinion. Also, the views are beyond amazing! It's worth a trip out if you are in the area, I really did enjoy it.Hi Valued Guest, Thank you for sharing your review of the Rose Hall Great House Tour with our Trip Advisor community. We booked through Tui and got transfers there and back, but if you’re in the Mo Bay Area it would be just as easy to grab a taxi I would have thought. As soon as we parked up and got off the bus, it was eerie straight away! The staff were lovely all throughout - shout out to our guide Chanelle!! She was brilliant! The tour of the house itself would have been amazing on its own, but all the added “extras” along the way made it! It has a long history of families and questionable accidents or killings on the property. The update was remarkable over 60 years ago and worth a visit. Nevertheless, the building is in need of some maintenance and repair. - KerryFlorinCape Town Central, South Africa11 contributionsHighly Recommended! We were so pleased to have done this tour. Shana was a truly wonderful guide and told us all the gripping stories associated with Rose Hall. Possibly because we went at midday (a quiet time) we were fortunate enough to be given a private tour which made it very special. We were absolutely fascinated by the rich history, not only of Rose Hall but also of the wider area as well as the brutal slave trade, the plantations and Great Houses, and of Jamaican culture. We learnt SO much. We left with a lot to reflect on and talk about. Don't just sit on the beach, GO TO ROSE HALL!Hi Valued Guest, Thank you for sharing your review of the Rose Hall Great House Tour with our Trip Advisor community. - Adri H12 contributionsRose Hall Great House TourMy review might be a touch biased as I have been waiting to go here for ages! However, we were here on a cruise excursion and I loved every bit of this tour. Our tour guide was excellent. She talked about the history of the home and its former owners. The home itself is beautiful and normally these historic homes can be extremely hot but there was a nice ocean breeze. At the end of our tour, we were given a complimentary fruit punch or you could buy a cocktail.Hi Valued Guest, Thank you for sharing your review of the Rose Hall Great House Tour with our Trip Advisor community. Overall the tour was good. However wish we did the day tour to have a better sense of the rooms as some were quite dark at night. One major downside to the tour was how they rip tourist off at the end. Throughout tour they will discuss how at the end you will go to a bar and they will give you spirits to relax and enjoy and you can take pictures in the bar. When we entered the bar the bartender told the group of all the drinks he can serve us. His name was "Dragon Daddy" and not once was anyone told there would be a charge for the drinks. There was even a sign with the drinks listed without any prices. From the reaction of the guests everyone was taken aback when he started passing out the drinks to everyone and "after telling each one of us it was $15.00 a drink." Really a fruity small drink in a glass cup with straw is $15.00 a piece. The tour mislead the group as if this was a complimentary drink and part of our fee we paid for the tour. One couple refused to pay the $30.00 and the bartender said it was OK?!? So guess if you paid him he took the overpriced drink money and if didn't guess let it go....as said at no point and time before drinks were handed out did they say there was a charge. Tourists beware of Dragon Daddy and his overpriced drinks at the end! #scam

We took the Rose Hall Great House and Highlights tour through Shore Excursions Group. The bottom line was they left us at the dock because others on the tour arrived an hour early and they decided not to wait. We caught up with them an hour and a half later - long story. We did see Rose Hall and it was worth seeing. The rest of the tour was a mess with mob rule running the show on what we did or didn't do. I wrote a full review on their site but of course it will never be published and they have never responded to me. Be careful!

Definitely a creepy house to tour at night. A bit overpriced but we bought our tickets at our hotel instead of online or at the venue. Would recommend, tour is interesting and the house and grounds are beautiful. A word of warning though, the home is very, very warm and stuffy inside. Bring a bottle of water or purchase one in the gift shop. There are coolers with beverages by the ticket office but are not open for purchase during the evening tours.

We were the last tour of the day, and had hired a private operator, Aldane/Damion, Touch of Jamaica, AD to take us from the Rose hall suites, to the Great House. Our guide, at the house was "Heather" and she was exceptional, being with her made you feel the presence of the past. Her knowledge just flowed from one room to the next with stories of the past history. she took plenty of time to answer questions about both the inside and outside of the home...a job well done , so if you want to go be sure to look for Heather, she is just wonderfully delightful.

The whole tour is 20 minutes. The house has interesting stories. Nicely told by the guide. Note - you can not take pictures unless you pay (expensive!) at the end you can eat at the restaurant but I did not try. It is worth coming and going to a night performance. Montego bay according to me there is nothing interesting and if you have a long way to go there, it's not worth it.

It is one of the rare places where you will find history that is not very old, the last restoration is recent... but there is a whole history around this house in addition to its evolution over the centuries.
So I see that several people are saying photos are prohibited inside, we simply had no flash like in many museums.
The problem is, like everything in Jamaica is too expensive!

Curly was our tour guide during the night tour and he was very engaging and knowledgeable. We enjoyed the history, decor, the staff who pretended to be ghosts and all the spooky occurrences. A suggestion - smaller groups. We were packed into small areas which took a little away from the great ambiance of the house. Also, I think drinks shouldn't be allowed on the tour. Three women brought their Buba cups full of alcohol on the tour and luckily they didn't spill any on the old furniture or carpeting, which would have been terrible.

Unfortunately would not recommend. Although the main tour guide was pleasant and informative, we felt harassed by another staff member. We were followed by a staff member who was not leading our tour and aggressively hit on the entire time. We were the only ones targeted in our tour. It made the experience extremely uncomfortable, especially as this was a night time haunted tour. This added an unwelcome layer of actual fear and discomfort to what should have been a fun activity.

My family are connoisseurs of ghost tours ha! We had differnt opinions on this one but since I am writing this I'm giving 5 stars. There are jump scare tactics (startling noises and people) that some of my family didn't prefer but I thought it was fun. I would have liked to do the day tour too to see in in the daylight and not wondering when someone was going to jump out.

The Rose Hall Great House currently does not provide transportation or taxi services. We hope this answers your question. Please feel free to let us know how else we may be of assistance to you

as with any trip, do your homework. Depending on your age & activity ability, I'd say to check each of them out. They have many who also do your transfers...(sales for "stuff", ect. these are the one's that may help out. if in doubt the ones in charge of all tour guides, would most likely be helpful or go to trip advisor to compare as these tourists usually let you know what's best. GOOD LUCK Or check out with locals at independent shops instead of those tour groups if you want to just hang loose. donna

Can you just turn up
It looks hard to get into with big closed gates at the front, how do you get in to buy your ticket. Will you just be put on the next tour
Written 7 May 2019
if you go with a taxi driver, the guard at the gate lets you in; you buy your tickets at the gift store and the driver drops you off right there. You can call ahead and find out what time the tours are scheduled. We had purchased our tickets at the resort with the intention of going with a group tour but the tour bus did not show up. fortunately, we took our ticket confirmation with us and we were able to use them and our contact person at the resort, reimbursed us for the taxi cost

Do you recommend buying tickets before arriving at port?
Written 13 January 2019
I may be too late for you, but we booked everything through Reggae Tours. They drove us to each destination I requested when booking, went up and bought tickets at each stop and got us in. It was wonderful having a private driver all day. Check out my review on their page. Request Kenny for a FUN time!!
But to answer your question- I don’t think you need to get tickets ahead. There was no line and the have multiple guides that take you when you arrive.
Written 18 February 2019
Definitely! It's a great historical tour in the day, the jump scares only happen in the evening.

Hi. Can you tell me how long is the tour? Is there a nice beach nearby?
Written 10 February 2018
Hi, tour is not long 30-45 minutes max. But it’s nice experience. Sea is very close but it’s all resorts at the bottom so you would need to go to Montego Bay to Doctor’s Cave Beach which is 10 minutes drive drive from Rose Hall.
