Praia do Forte is a lovely town with great beaches and a low-key, relaxed atmosphere. It's a great change from the chaos of Salvador. The turtle reserve was disappointing, however. While the work being done is excellent, the displays of the turtles leave a lot to be desired. Given the resources of this project, it felt tragic to see enormous turtles captive in small ponds. Also, we'd been promised a guide in Spanish or English, but our guide only spoke Portuguese. We understand a good deal of Portuguese when spoken a bit slowly, so we asked the guide to slow down, but he did not. As a result, we missed a good deal along the way.

Close enough to Salvador, still very safe and peaceful. Highly recommended to visit if you are traveling to Bahia state.

The name of the project is the abbreviation of words TArtaruga MARina (marine turtles)
It is the conservation project and the main goal of TAMAR is to protect marine turtles from ocean water pollution etc. Our experience of visiting this place was disappointing. We were badly impressed on how this scientific facility is organized. All giant turtles prisoned in Tamar are located in small swimming pools surrounded by low fences and visitors of the project center can easily touch animals. E.g. small kids were pushing on turtle's backs and it was disturbing for poor turtles, so animals were trying to run away from this entertaining torture. The description of the project goals and results were very poorly presented on displays and tags, so it will not provide relevant edutatement experience for your curious kids as well. The project by itself is the pure destination point only for tourists on Praia do Forte resort and the center is built on the commercialization of the idea "how cute marine turtles are". IMHO the project is more focused on selling themed merchandize with turtles images and TAMAR logo than on sharing some interesting results and data on marine biology researches performed in the center. The only one thing I liked in my visit was the perfect view on the Praia do Forte coastline with "piscinas naturais" and old Garcia D'Avila lighthouse. I assume it is a good idea to visit the Tamar Porject if you are living in Praia do Forte hotels just to bring some fresh impressions to your beach-n-caipirinha routine. It doesn't worth a dedicated and generally overpriced visit, especially if you are interested in nature preservation and scientific projects.

We went to this place, on the understanding that it was purely a conservation project, how wrong we were.
upon walking into the site you are greeted with cardboard cut outs of cartoon turtles for the kids, I thought they have to do something to bring in additional revenue, unfortunately this theme was throughout the site. Large turtle in pools throughout the site with a large shark, sting rays and manta rays, all, I was informed were never going to be retuned to the sea. The sting rays were there for entertainment so kids could touch them. There were small fences about 30 cm high and I watched as people were stepping over and picking up the turtles. I wish I never went here, cant believe the lonely planet is recommending this place, they my do some good in saving some of the turtles from the beaches, but this is not reflected in this place

We have been in Salvador for the World Cup and decided to rent a car to visit Praia de Forte for the day. It was so lovely- a quaint little beach town with lots of shops and restaurants. The beaches and town were a much needed break from the hustle an bustle of Salvador. It is touristy but it seems it is where Brazilians go for a long weekend. Everyone in our group wished we had planned ahead and stayed a night or two.
We had the best Moqueca there at a restaurant called sabor de villa. The restaurant was recommended by Newton, the local owner of the only Wine bar we have seen yet. It's called Wine Bar and is definitely worth visiting also!

Praia Do Forte, Bahia - Brasil
This is a sweet place. The main district is only accessible by foot or bike. The transit system is composed of a fleet of double wide surreys powered by bike peddling. Very Eco friendly. Many shops and restaurants line the two lane walkway. Vendors plying their goods, roasted corn on the cob, a Bahian treat made from shredded coconut and copious amounts of sugar, looks like a pancake. Trinkets, souvenirs of the area are plentiful. There are two supermarkets well stocked. Always a first stop when I travel, water, Brazilian snacks...... The TAMAR project is a wonderful experience. This is a research and rescue institute devoted to saving the many species of sea turtles that inhabit Brazil. This is a place to explore and learn about conservation and environment. Very well presented in Portuguese and English. Well worth the stop! For the most part I found myself walking the beach and relaxing in the slow warm friendly environment. This is an awesome destination!

Visiting Praia do Forte was a good idea, but it was not totally worth it because my family and I had already visited the Tamar Sea Turtle Project in Ubatuba. The colorful fishing village is picturesque. Trying the local corn on the cob and "cocada" was the obvious choice, but great anyway.

If you want to get away from the general public beaches, this is a great day trip, an hour+ away from the city. The Tamar project is an extra entrance fee, but well worth it. Or you can just chill on the beach for the afternoon, away from the crowds of the public beaches.

There is now a entrance charge of 10 Reais to the Castle for adults
and 5 Reais for children and students since October 2011.
But I can still highly recommend a visit since there is a fabulous view from up there and also the ruins are a perfect photo subject!
It`s about 4km from Town. We take a taxi up for 30 Reais and walked back along the Road and part following a pathway trough the forest. Also recommendable.

Praia do Lord.
