You HAVE to go to this place! It is so absolutely magnificent! I love love love to walk up the dam for a total of 2.8km if I remember correctly. It is so amazing. The wind when you reach the top is crazyyy. There's also a hidden playground/resting area up the steps when you reach the top. This has became one of my fav spots for exercises. The walk up isn't too tiring as well (depends on your fitness level). There's also this uncle who sells homemade nutmeg at the bottom before your hike up starts, buy it definitely. If you love nature like I do, get your ass up there!

A nice walk. It's not too far to do a circuit around the reservoir and definitely worth it. There are wild monkeys so be careful not to walk around holding a carrier bag because they will assume it's food.
After the monkeys, the place is quiet and tranquil but at the same time brimming with wildlife. The sound of cicadas, the occasional big butterfly, birds chirping.
In addition to that, it's just beautiful scenery all the way.

We were already in Air Itam, so we went up hill to the dam. The road isn't very wide and quite steep. But when arriving near the dam there is a decend parking lot. The place is well maintained and a bit less warm than the city. In the jungle that surrounds the lake are many birds, reptiles and mamals. In the lake we saw a large water turtle, at least 60 cm diameter! Further a Malayan Monitor lizard of 3 m length coming out of the water and high in the sky two bald eagles. The trail around the lake is 2,8 km length and easy accessible.

Just a pleasant walk, long or short. People talk to you, take plenty of water. Lovely ambling paths for oldies and children. Some monkeys who caused no problems, some dogs, again no problems but don`t show food.
Restful, green, peaceful.

For a wonderful peaceful walk at any time of the day, this is the place to come. Mornin g though is particularly good with it being somewhat cooler. You can take tracks through the jungle if you want more excitement. A must do.

The air is very fresh and suitable to sit down for meditation. We get to enjoy the beautiful greens along the way. Advisable to bring a cap or umbrella as weather is hot.
It is worthwhile visiting as the scenery is very nice and you can take photos for remembrance.

A tranquil hangout for nature lovers. The reservoir contrasts with the greens giving out a sense of calm and peace. Watching the Penang city skyline from the top feels amazing.

After all the happy eating and dining in Penang, we deliberately chose Air Itam Dam as the morning destination to shed off some body fats (guilty =)). Eight of our group members decided to walk up from the foot of the hill while 2 of us drove up to the entrance of the Dam. It took about 45mins for the group walking up the hill to join in.

The nature walk around the entire Dam supposed to take about 30mins. After walking about 10mins from starting point, we came to a crossroad where there was a closed gate on the right or to continue the same road path. Thinking the gate was closed, we chose the same road path which led us to the uphill road. After walking for some 30mins, we somehow sensed we were in the wrong path. Luckily we enquired with a local motorist to realise that we were actually heading towards Penang Hill direction.
The so-called "closed" gate was the right direction to walk round the Dam. The gate was closed to deter bikers from entering but we could just walk through. So take note if you are there.

Weather was hot in Penang but there were some short breeze while walking round the Dam. Nothing much to see around the Dam, just enjoy the tranquil nature walk. I saw more locals than tourists visiting the place, since it was a Sunday morning.

Locals usually park their car at the hill top ( same level with the Dam ) and walk from the gate of the dam to the inner forest reserve. The parking lot on hill top can only accommodate approx.20 cars therefore visitors can either park at the base of the hill or the Kek Lok Si temple private car park however walking up hill is not for the weak heart.Weekend lots of hikers uses the dam forest reserve trail to hike up to Penang Hill which is approx.3hrs.
